There was a point and time when pharmacies weren’t just about drugs, medicine, sundry items and cigarettes. Way back when, it was pretty common for pharmacies offer up a lunch grill, cafe or soda fountain for their hungry customers. One popular example in the area is Hayes Barton Cafe at Five Points which is paired up with Hayes Barton Pharmacy. Another option is the refreshed Pharmacy Cafe at Person Street Pharmacy! This little eatery has recently had a change of menu and decor so it was time for me to slide in for a visit and see what was new.
Located in the up and coming Oakwood neighborhood, the Pharmacy Cafe gives you one additional eating option besides the Station at Person Street, Standard Foods or Krispy Kreme. 🙂 The space inside Pharmacy Cafe is simple and basic with counter seats near the grill, one large communal table and some 2-tops down the side. The menu is chalked up overhead and consists of a short breakfast menu (12 items), some sodas and fizzes, sandwiches (10+ choices) and ice cream treats! It’s not a big menu but interesting enough for a quick bite.
I order up and hang out at a counter seat with my light and stormy fizz which is really refreshing. Pharmacy Cafe has a nice little pickled bar with a variety of veggies in mason jars for customers, maybe next time! It takes 10 minutes for my pulled pork sandwich which comes with a sweet potato salad. The sandwich looks great: a nicely toasted bun stacked with tender pork, pickled red onions, mustard greens and a tangy mustard sauce. It’s just about the right size for lunch and plays off the sweet mustard sauce on the more luscious pork. Simple and fancy in its own special way! The sweet potato salad is a nice accompaniment and you can certainly tell the Pharmacy Cafe is all about fresh, well-prepared ingredients.
Service is fine and there’s quite a few local folks eating here for lunch, I imagine the Pharmacy Cafe hasn’t attracted too much attention beyond the immediate neighborhood. But it’s worth the effort! The Pharmacy Cafe is now open 7 days a week until 4pm so it’s all about breakfast and lunch here. And I’m certainly curious enough after my first visit to come back and try some more off their menu. Especially one of those ice cream sundaes, please! So if you’re looking for a good sandwich or breakfast and you’re not in the mood for a krispy kreme donut, swing on down Person Street and grab a seat at the counter at the Pharmacy Cafe. It just may be the cure for your hunger pains come lunch time!
