Now Open: Boxyard RTP in Durham

As the Triangle continues to grow and develop, the area around RTP, I-40 and Rte 147 has seen a glut of building activity. Given the upcoming Apple campus in this area it probably shouldn’t be a surprise! And one of the newest developments is Boxyard RTP: a complex built from shipping containers next to the Frontier corporate office space.

I visited a similar development in New Mexico called Green Jeans which utilizes standard shipping containers that are usually 8′ wide by 8′ high and 20′ to 40′ long. It’s a cool concept and good option to re-use these commonly, discarded containers. And while the complex officially opened in June, not all scheduled vendors are open yet and will do so over the year.

But for right now (November 2021) you can enjoy four food vendors, two drink vendors (and some retail) ranging from barbeque to baked goods, coffee, beer and sweets.

  • Lawrence BBQ (Smoked meats)
  • Lagoon Leisure Bar (Cocktails)
  • Buzzy Bakes (Bakery)
  • Beyu Caffe (Coffee)
  • Wonder Puff (Cotton Candy)
  • Fullsteam RTP (Beer, Pizza)
  • Carrburritos (Mexican)
  • Bulkogi (Korean)

Once you’ve gotten your eats or sweets, head on over to the covered patio to enjoy! Boxyard RTP also has a second level with more seating and a catbird view of the main hangout area. The color palette of bright reds, whites and blues are super patriotic and work well for the space.

And while the vendors continue to spin up at Boxyard RTP, expect more and more activities and events here. Over the course of the past two months I’ve run into a pop-up market, yoga class, and DJ spinning tunes for the crowd.

I’ll be adding to this post over the upcoming months as businesses open up at Boxyard RTP. And while there’s still work to be done, the development is off to a great start and I’m looking forward to upcoming vendors like Fullsteam Brewery and Carrburritos.

Barcelona Wine Bar, a High-Energy Celebration of Spanish Tapas

Front of Barcelona Wine Bar, Raleigh – nctriangledining.com

When it comes to Spanish tapas in the Triangle, Durham had the market cornered with the ever-popular Mateo and Taberna Tapas! As a Raleighite, I had tapas on my short list of desired restaurants and thankfully, Barcelona Wine Bar has come to the rescue! Part of the Del Frisco restaurant group (including bartaco), Barcelona Wine Bar has about 17 locations on the eastern seaboard and Colorado. Barcelona Wine Bar’s prime location in the Dillon building is its second location in North Carolina, woo-hoo! And after several dinner visits, color me impressed. Here’s why you should be considering a visit to this hot, new NC Triangle restaurant located at the new Dillon Building!

Corner location of Barcelona Wine Bar, Raleigh - nctriangledining.com
Corner location of Barcelona Wine Bar, Raleigh – nctriangledining.com

Located in a premium corner spot at West and Martin Street, the Barcelona is one of the new fun and hip eateries that continue to be opened up at the Dillon. A lovely patio area with greenery fronts the restaurant and you’ll usually find an energetic crowd milling about. Step through the narrow doorway and you’ll run into the centerpiece tapas bar in front (U-shaped) which is usually very busy. Overhead you’ll spy hollowed out, wood tubes and to the sides, rectangular “wood cinder blocks” which provides some separation between the bar and the kitchen or side dining room. Interior design at Barcelona wine bar is very organic and rustic, it feels a bit weathered even though it’s a brand new space!

Cool bar at Barcelona Wine Bar, Raleigh - nctriangledining.com

I’ve eaten many times here, usually at the bar and once on the patio. The large tapas menu offers up an array of charcuterie (3 cheese-meat choices for $17.50), salads, small plates, Chef’s items along with some desserts that are not on the main menu. Barcelona Wine Bar also offers up a handful of entree type dishes in the $20+ range (including paella) but where’s the fun in that? There is plenty to choose from for meat eaters or vegetarians but I’ll give a slight advantage to Team Meat at Barcelona Wine Bar! The wine list is pretty extensive and focused on European wine with glasses mostly $10 and up, don’t miss the cava. I’d expect to spend $30 and up for a meal with one drink so it’s a mid-priced type of meal for Raleigh.

Spanish tortilla at Barcelona Wine Bar, Raleigh - nctriangledining.com
Spanish tortilla at Barcelona Wine Bar, Raleigh – nctriangledining.com

For starters, the Spanish tortilla (omelet) is stellar! Tender, thin-sliced potatoes are layered with egg and olive oil to present a luscious take on a very simple dish and it is executed perfectly here at Barcelona. Don’t miss the croquetas de jamon which are delicately fried balls of deliciousness. The crunchy exterior breaks open to a soft and cheesy interior accentuated with salty ham, wonderful stuff. And yes, you must try the albondigas, meatballs made with a bit of lamb in a chunky tomato sauce. The albondigas are bites of savory meatiness and filling for a small dish. I usually skip the complimentary rustic bread basket but some of that country bread sopped in the tomato sauce from the albondigas would be heavenly.

Now while officially Barcelona is all about small plates, I consider some of the higher-priced chef’s specials to be more entree like given the meat-heaviness of the dishes here. I had a fantastic NY Strip paired with red chimichurri which was wonderful. Thinly sliced, perfectly cooked (medium) medallions of beef sporting that luscious fat on the edge topped with the flavorful chimichurri sauce makes for a taste sensation. Paired with the plump, charred sugar snap peas, you’d have a perfect meal with both the savory beef and crunchy greens to balance your plate!

And after all these small plates, make sure you save room for dessert. It’s a small menu but loved Barcelona’s crepes salguero (crepes with dulce de leche cream, hazelnuts) and their chocolate flourless cake. So small and decadent, the cake is filled with creamy chocolate ganache! A glass of port would probably be the happy ending to a wonderful meal here at Barcelona Wine Bar.

One other note, Barcelona Wine Bar has added a weekend brunch (Saturday and Sunday) and it has become one of my favorite spots to celebrate the weekend! With the addition of some tasty morning sweets (olive oil pancakes, torrijas-french toast) along with some Spanish flavored brunch savories (gambas y grits, serrano benedict), makes Barcelona one of the best brunches in the Oak City in my opinion. Don’t miss out!

While Barcelona is still evolving as a new restaurant, they do a good job training and preparing their staff. Just beware that the bar can be pretty energetic and boisterous (LOUD), if you’re up for a quieter meal you’re better off in the dining room or patio. But wherever you sit at Barcelona Wine Bar, your taste buds are in for a treat. The chef back in the kitchen has got some serious talent and knows how to take these simple dishes to another level which is to me, a perfect reason to celebrate the arrival of Barcelona Wine Bar and its Spanish tapas in the Oak City. We were way overdue for tapas and Barcelona Wine Bar was definitely worth the wait!

Retake: The Flying Saucer in Raleigh, a Classic Destination for Great Beer!

Flying Saucer in Raleigh - nctriangledining.com
Flying Saucer in Raleigh – nctriangledining.com

When it comes to beer in the Triangle, we’ve been in a renaissance for the past 5 years! Breweries, bottle shops and brew pubs have been opening up, left and right, in Raleigh, Durham and points beyond. I mean, who doesn’t love a tasty, locally brewed beer on a warm summer’s day?! But way back when, before this whole beer revolution started, there were only a handful of spots you could go to get a great craft beer, enter the Flying Saucer on Morgan Street! This beer and brews stalwart has been pouring out great beer for years and even though it wasn’t my personal favorite spot, I decide to go back for some visits to see how things have held up at the Saucer. And I’m glad to say that it’s still doing an excellent job serving great beer for Oak City residents…

Located on the corner of Morgan and Harrington Street, you can’t miss the Flying Saucer! You’ll usually find the covered patio, filled with Raleighites enjoying a good beer and snacks when the weather is nice. Stepping through the doorway you’ll immediately be hit by the enormity of the Flying Saucer space and its beer hall interior. Checked floor in black and green, long bar with taps to the right and four-tops to the left. And yes, beer plates! Gold rimmed plates line every bare spot on the walls and ceilings, with a customer message on each. Part of the UFO club that the Flying Saucer runs, taste and/or drink 200 different beers and you’ll get your own special plate to adorn the Flying Saucer space! The beer hall is a bit worn and aged which adds to the charm here. There have been a LOT of brews and beers quaffed down at the Flying Saucer over the years.

Sitting down at the bar and choosing one of the Flying Saucer’s 200+ beers can be a bit intimidating but thankfully the staff here is super knowledgeable when it comes to suds. And honestly, after the Raleigh Beer Garden offered up 360+ beers, the Saucer seems less difficult. At least most of the Saucer customers know their beers pretty well, making the selection process, quicker. The Flying Saucer is also known for for its waitstaff with many of the female servers sporting plaid skirts and knee-high socks, but you know what? Don’t let their looks fool you. They know their beer here really well, too.

Great beer, cool decor but what about the food at the Saucer? Well they’ve offer a small selection of appetizers, sandwiches, salads (hahaha), plates and pizzas. You do need something to eat along with all that great beer! The food falls comfortably into the category of simple bar food and is not super memorable. But I do think they are upping their game when it comes to the eats. From snacks to sandwiches and pizzas, it’s all hearty rib-sticking fare are the Flying Saucer

A recent visit for brunch turned up a Tex-Mex hash brown skillet and breakfast pizza! Tasty hash-browns topped with cheddar-jack cheese, fried egg and jalapenos, yum! And the breakfast pizza topped with scrambled egg, bacon and cheddar was pretty solid too! The Flying Saucer does brunch from 11am to 3pm. I think it’ll be a fun option out on that patio once it gets warmer. The Flying Saucer also runs beer specials on Sundays ($3 pints, NC Beer) and Mondays ($3 pints, all taps).

So a slow round of applause for the venerable Flying Saucer on Morgan Street! While the Raleigh food scene has improved by leaps and bounds over the years, the Saucer has also upped its game to keep up. The Flying Saucer may not be top of mind for a drink or food, I think it’s a totally decent spot to get a feel for what Raleigh is about and sample some great beer. And while I may not ever have a UFO plate up on the wall with my name on it, I will definitely be back to sample more off of their food menu!

First Take: Yard House for a Hip Suburban Meal and Beer

Patio at Yard House, Raleigh- NC Triangle Dining
Patio at Yard House, Raleigh- NC Triangle Dining

One of the newest eateries in the N. Raleigh area, the Yard House hails from S. California and dishes out great beer and upscale pub food.  Located at the base of Capstrat Bank next to the new Cowfish Sushi and Burger restaurant, the Yard House has carved out its own niche as hip, upscale experience.  With rock music raining down from above, an industrial feel replete with blacked out overhead piping, metal counter tops and staff decked out in black gives the Yard House a much more urban feel than most other options in the area.  The bar has a long string of taps and the beer list is L-O-N-G!  Similar to what you might find at the Flying Saucer and definitely some serious competition for the World of Beer next door.  But yes it’s still a chain so we’ll see what Yard House dishes out for food…

Thankfully there’s no wait here on a Saturday night, the three of us get seated in a long wooden booth that could probably handle eight people.  The voluminous beer menu is placed in front of each of us and in addition to the long beer list, Yard House has a very long food menu.  Lots of American classics with a mix of more than American: Mexican, Asian and more.  Nothing too odd or crazy, I go with a standard BBQ-bacon and cheddar burger with a coconut shrimp starter.  The place is bustling with plenty of staff and a large open kitchen.  The appetizer shows up: three large, butterflied shrimp with a nice brown coconut coating sitting against a pile of shredded carrots and possibly squash (?).  I really like how this appetizer is plated with a bright orange-green sauce around it, makes for a great visual feast. The coconut shrimp are decent but a little pricey for over $12.

About 10 minutes later our mains arrive.  We’ve got a plate of fish tacos, a good-looking ahi salad and my great looking burger.  It comes with a paper cone of match-stick fries, a side of aioli along with some bourbon BBQ sauce.  Love the glazed bun for my burger and how the sauce is served on the side.  My burger is nicely charred and contrasts well against the cheese and zippy bourbon sauce.  Unfortunately that good-looking bun was a bit dry, boo!   And the fries?!  Totally miss match-stick fries since Bogart’s shut down, these Yard House fries are a bit greasy but great for dipping into the aioli and ketchup.  Yard House serves up a decent burger cooked to order, no complaints there. We pass on dessert but a smores pie that goes by smells temptingly good and caloric, maybe next time.

Beer taps at Yard House, Raleigh- NC Triangle Dining

With a large patio, huge selection of beers and interesting list of meals, I’m pretty sure the Yard House will succeed in its upscale, suburban location.  Perfect for families and couples looking for something a bit different in the hood.  The food is solid and varied enough to keep most palates happy and I’ll need to try some more of that vast menu.  But in the end, the Yard House is still a chain that follows the usual North Hills M.O.: decent eats priced a bit higher than normal.  With pints at $6.50 and up and burgers at about $12, I’d say that most of the offerings here are a $1 or $2 more than they should be.  And that’s fine if you’re in the area and want to eat here.  But for me, that’s a reason why I typically avoid North Hills and chains.  I prefer one-off spots that provide more unique ambiance and more value.  That’s not to say the Yard House is bad, it’s decent.  Just understand what you’re getting into and you’ll be fine…

Di Fara Pizza Tavern, Cary – An Exceptional Example of Classic NYC Pizza for NC

Front of Di Fara Pizza Tavern in Cary - nctriangledining.com
Front of Di Fara Pizza Tavern in Cary – nctriangledining.com

As a self-proclaimed pizza-holic, I can honestly say I will wait for hours for a good pizza! Whenever I’m visiting a new area, I do a cursory search for the best pizza available and usually make an effort to visit. Based on the Daily Meal’s 101 Best Pizzas in the country list, I’ve managed to visit 10 of the top 30 in the USA, alright! And growing up in the Northeast has honed my appreciation for the wondrous experience of diving into a pie with a divine crust, luscious tomatoes and soft cheese, truly a magical experience. One OG pizza stand-out over the years has been Di Fara Pizza in Brooklyn whose owner, Dom, has been known to pull pies straight out of the oven with his bare hands. I was able to visit once and watched him meticulously finish off his pies with careful snips of basil and a thorough drizzle of olive oil. It was a sublime pizza experience in my early days and worth the 2 hour wait.

Flash forward to 2019 and it’s announced that there will be a new Di Fara Pizza Tavern opening up in Cary by his nephew. Given the pandemic, development was slowed down and finally the new Di Fara Pizza Tavern soft-opened up in early February of 2021. I was able to stop in for an early dinner to try out their pizza and it met all my pizza-holic expectations! Inside, the space is still pretty sparse given how recently they opened up and to allow for social distancing. Kitchen in front with a large Di Fara logo, a dining room with maybe 10 or 12 tables along with a long bar to the side. There’s also a patio outside for when the weather warms (and dries) up. Thankfully they do have their ABC license and are already serving beer and wine, it looks like they are set up to do cocktails too, but I didn’t try any.

The menu is really basic like most pizzerias: Cheese pizza for $25, house specialty pizza for $29 to $35 and each topping is $2 for custom pies. Pizza is also available by the slice along with a calzone option. But of course for me on my first visit, I do the standard 18″ cheese and expect to bring leftovers home. And it’s an excellent pie with a great crust that snaps a bit. Unlike Neapolitan pies, they bake them pretty crisp here at Di Fara Pizza Tavern which I know some people prefer. The cheese is thick but leaves room for the mellow tomatoes to shine, I’m guessing they use a cheese blend here. And there’s plenty of basil on top for that pungent kick of green, gardeny flavor. Overall I am really pleased with my first visit and this pie. While it may be a bit different than the Brooklyn classic, it’s pretty close and really darn good. A well balanced pizza all around for texture and flavors, cooked perfectly. Service was friendly and prompt at the bar which was a nice surprise. They’ve even got a great craft beer list to wash your za down!

While the prices may give you pause, it’s an excellent example of a great pizza for the NC Triangle and has vaulted quickly into my Top 10 list for the area. Di Fara Pizza Tavern uses official “NYC water” for their dough and I’ll look into that claim sometime soon. And I’ll be back to try some of those specialty pies and toppings but will need some friends for that endeavor. But yeah, if you’re a pizza aficionado, make an effort to get down to Cary to try out the new Di Fara Pizza Tavern. Who knows, maybe we’ll see it on that Daily Meal 101 best pizza list sometime soon…
