First Take: Silverspot Cinema in Chapel Hill For a Luxe Movie-Watching Experience!

When it comes to movies, the Triangle has been on a roll of late. Cinebistro in Cary started the premium movie theater revolution and then Raleigh Grande’s upgrade wasn’t that far behind. But out in Chapel Hill, I had a chance to attend a media preview of the restaurant at the new Silverspot Cinema. Great food and dining experience at Trilogy, sans the movie. Of course, eventually I had to make the trek back to Chapel Hill to catch a movie at Silverspot. And Silverspot Cinema does a good job for movie-goers but it’s not perfect. Read on for the details if you’re curious!

Silverspot sits in the very busy shopping plaza off of Estes Drive in Chapel Hill. You can’t miss it on the far northern end, it’s got a big mural with bewitching eyes facing the parking lot. The full-service restaurant, Trilogy, sits in front but you can whiz on in past the patio outside, through a second set of doors. Inside you’ll immediately run into a bank of ticket kiosks to the right. Touch-screen your way thought the interface, pick your movie and seat, swipe your card and you’re good to go! Ticket prices at Silverspot are about $10 to $15 depending on when you go, on par with the other luxe theaters in the Triangle.

Head further in and you’ll hit the concessions area on the left. Silverspot offers the usual popcorn, candies and drinks along with a short beer list ($6 to $10) and some interesting food options. In addition to burgers, hot dogs and fries you have a selection of items from Trilogy restaurant: pizzas, sliders, mac n cheese, truffle fries, kung pow shrimp and more! I didn’t try the food here but be assured that Trilogy Restaurant offers some excellent food, check out my full review here!

Once you’ve got your snacks and goodies, head on in to the theater! The decor is pretty mod but in a retro way here at Silverspot: lots of dark greys and white in interesting geometric patterns. The theater itself is stadium style with raised seating. About 12 leather chairs in a row and 8 rows deep. Silverspot’s leather chairs are super-comfortable but note, they don’t tip back or have foot rests unlike the Raleigh Grande or Cinebistro. The front row does have an ottoman to raise your feet up, if that’s your thing.

And as for the movie watching experience at Silverspot, it’s quite good. The picture is very sharp and clear (go Moana!) and the sound-system is powerful with just the right amount of thump in the bass. I gotta say that while I wouldn’t mind having reclining seats here, you don’t miss much at Silverspot if you’re really focused on the movie. The chairs are plenty comfy enough for the 2 hour visit. So I’m so glad to have hit up Silverspot for a movie-watching experience, finally. While it may be a touch behind Cinebistro in terms of comfort and food convenience, it’s definitely a step up from the Raleigh Grande. Each of these theaters has its own pluses and minuses, it just depends on what you’re up for and where you live!

First Take: The Alamo Drafthouse, an Unforgettable, Deluxe Movie Experience

When it comes to movies, I’m still a huge fan of all the deluxe theaters in the Triangle! While I love cranking up my HD screen at home with surround sound, there’s nothing like catching a new movie in a cozy recliner with food and beer close at hand. So I was excited to hear about the new Alamo Drafthouse coming to Raleigh but I admit I was curious as to how it would compete with places like IMAX, Raleigh Grande, Cinebistro and Silverspot. But after a couple of visits to the Alamo Drafthouse, I can tell you that it certainly holds its own in the super-cinema competition!

One of the reasons I do like Alamo Drafthouse is because it’s given downtown Raleigh another movie option besides IMAX. While IMAX is awesome, it’s limitation to one huge screen, first come, first served seating and minimal concessions make it a more basic experience. This new Alamo Drafthouse is located just minutes away from downtown Raleigh off of New Bern Avenue in the eastern party of the Oak City which is growing rapidly. And while the shopping plaza it sits in is a bit run-down, the Alamo Drafthouse itself is top-notch in terms of construction and design. With an outdoor patio up front and slick neon lounge inside, Alamo Drafthouse nearly gives you the feeling it’s a bar rather than a movie theater.

You’ll also find the Video Vortex, a one-of-a-kind video shop where you can rent VHS tapes for free. The Video Vortex is meant for movie buffs given the titles they stock (kitschy, independent movies) and the VHS format. Note that you can also rent VHS recorders here since you may have thrown that old beastie out, years ago! The bar at Video Vortex stocks over 40 decent brews which is at the core of what the Alamo Drafthouse is all about!

Now one thing you’ll immediately notice at Alamo Drafthouse is NO ticket booth or ticket takers! You buy your tickets online ($8 to $12 for 2-D flicks) and carry it into the theater on your smartphone app. At the theater, there will be waitstaff inside to check you in, they will likely ask to see your ticket and your drivers license. There is a small customer service area by the bar if you do need human help. And if you’re a big movie buff, don’t miss their season pass which allows for unlimited movies for $22/month. With 10 screens, Alamo Drafthouse Raleigh offers up a nice selection of current movies and mixes in some classics from time to time. The hallways are very bright and colorful with kitschy movie posters and prints lining the walls.

The theaters themselves are comfortable and modern with leather chaise seating with motorized leg rests and decent rise between rows. The seats are pretty comfortable and each one has a fixed side-table with light underneath. I noticed that while the seats are motorized, they don’t tilt quite as far back as other theaters so you don’t end up in full-on snooze mode! Food is served in the theater (30 minutes before your movie starts) and also during the movie itself. FYI but in general they do not allow seating once a movie starts so be on time! But what is cool is the custom, Alamo Drafthouse clips and videos they show before they movie. They are produced and made based upon the movie you are seeing and help get you excited before your flick starts!

Alamo Drafthouse offers up a nice selection of fancier appetizers, burgers, pizzas and sandwiches. I’d put their food menu as better than Raleigh Grande and similar to Frank’s Cinebowl in the mid-tier in terms of quality and choices. All the items are in the $6 to $15 range which is pretty affordable. Hand your server your credit card and they’ll come back with the receipt about 15 or 20 minutes before your movie ends. The screens are pretty nicely done with good sound-systems but the movie-watching experience won’t quite blow you away like IMAX.

I tried out a very tasty chicken meatball in cast iron skillet served with some garlic bread. And the patty melt at Alamo Drafthouse was quite good, too. Served on thick Texas toast and layered with caramelized onions, it makes for a tasty meal. The food at Alamo Drafthouse falls into the category of basic sports bar/pub eats but they do have a handful of regional specials revolving around Southwestern Hatch chiles (mac n cheese, chips n queso, loaded fries). Your wait person will bring your bill about 20 minutes before the end of the movie.

The one takeaway I have for you is that the Alamo Drafthouse is about serious movie-watching. They have a no text-talk policy and will enforce it if there are complaints from other guests. You will be tossed out without a refund after one warning. It’s also pretty much an 18+ affair with no infants outside of special events. Now you may find that off-putting as a parent but please understand those guidelines going into the theater. Like many of the other deluxe movie theaters in the Triangle, the target audience is probably a 20 to 55 year old that is serious about movie-watching and the entire experience. All I can say is that I really appreciate what they’re trying to do here at the Alamo Drafthouse and it works well for me as a Raleighite. Given the easy route down to New Bern Avenue, I can see myself moving a lot of my movie-watching to this new luxe theater for convenience. So welcome to the Oak City, Alamo Drafthouse! May your future be as bright as your signage and hallways…
