A’Verde Cocina and Tequila Library Offering Up Fruity Cocktails and Fanciful Food Presentation

If you’re a foodie in the Raleigh area, you’d have likely heard about High Horse, a restaurant from Top Chef winner Katsuji Tanabe that opened up in late 2019 at City Market. A stylish and trendy restaurant that focused on wood-fired dishes and brought a new LA sensibility to our food scene. However, timing is everything in life and the ensuing COVID pandemic took out many of our local restaurants, including High Horse. Fast forward three years later and Chef Tanabe was going to be making a comeback with the new A’Verde Cocina and Tequila Library in Cary. I had a pretty good feeling of what to expect after a pop-up dinner months earlier but was curious to see what he would do with a new space further out from downtown Raleigh.

A’Verde is located in a busy plaza right next to the popular Seol Grille (Korean BBQ) restaurant. Renovated from an old Wild Wing Cafe space, A’Verde has a somewhat utilitarian feel from the outside along with a nice, covered side patio. Inside, you’ll be greeted by some hostesses up front. Music leaking out from the speakers overhead, bar area with lounge to the left, and a large, open dining room in front of you. There’s a loud and lively feel to the space with a lot of activity and energy! Colors are predominantly spring greens and organic browns giving the space a garden-type feel.

As a more upscale Mexican restaurant, A’Verde has a creative and fun cocktail list, similar to High Horse. Choose from quirky, tongue-in-cheek names like Sponsor Me, #TakeMeBack alluding to Chef Tanabe’s Mexican roots. But what I can tell you for sure is that his cocktails tend to lean towards fruity and aromatic along with some visual flair. The Sponsor Me (Tanqueray, St. Elder, tequila, lime, lavender) comes with some dry ice and bubbles like a witch’s cauldron right in front of you. The #TakeMeBack mixes up passionfruit, tequila, sour mix, a wine float along with a mango-chile paleta dunked inside, a fun and filling cocktail. As you can guess, Chef Katsuji likes to show off a bit as you’ll find as you dine across the menu.

The menu at A’Verde is not wildly different for a Mexican restaurant offering tacos and enchiladas along with a handful of signature items. Given his part Asian heritage, Chef Katsuji also rolls in some Asian flavors and dishes such as the adobo fried rice, but the menu is primarily upscale Mexican.  Over the course of my visits, I had the chance to try out a fun ceviche tostada. Marinated chunks of ahi tuna, serrano chiles, and lime juice layered between two crispy tostada shells. It’s a fun and substantial starter that gets your palate ready for the rest of the meal. For mains, A’Verde’s tacos are quite good, served on thick, soft blue corn tortillas with a good selection of sauces and fillings on the side. Enjoyed their pork belly tacos which were quite filling! On the list of showy dishes is the Ribeye, Shrimp and Bacon fajeetas (sic) which are finished table-side. A large cast-iron platter filled with the meats is seared with a flourish of flames and fire before serving. It’s a substantial entree but not substantially different than what’s served elsewhere.

Now if you’ve gotten this far in the meal and still have some appetite left, you won’t want to miss A’Verde’s desserts! Inexpensively priced at under $10, choose from an ube flan, tres leches cake, and the outrageous churros with nutella. The churros will easily serve two people and features a bowl of crisp, freshly fried churro pieces on top of a scoop of vanilla ice cream and served with a shower of nutella strings on top. A fun finish to your meal at A’Verde, that’s for sure, check out the video below!

While I will certainly miss High Horse, A’Verde offers some similar experiences but in a very different vibe. Given its location, A’Verde Cocina has a more suburban feel but also more authentic given Chef Katsuji’s background. The staff wears Mexican blouses and the decor highlights the experience as upscale Mexican, similar to what you might get at Centro in downtown Raleigh or maybe the old Jose and Sons. That being said, I still had a bit of a challenge wrapping my head around the prices for entrees at A’Verde which are on the high side. But if you enjoy higher-end Mexican eats and want some food and performance flair, you’ll enjoy your meal at A’Verde Cocina and Tequila Library. A’Verde now also serves a brunch on the weekends if you want to try it out outside of dinner hours, enjoy!

First Take: Las Marias Tacos y Pupusas in Raleigh for Authentic Mexican Fare!

When it comes to Mexican eats, the situation reminds me of Chinese food. In that there are so many different types of Mexican eats in this food category ranging from Americanized Mexican to more authentic taquerias and taco shops. And I’ll eat it all, but I’m usually searching for Mexican eats that are a bit more authentic to explore the cuisine. Thankfully up on Wake Forest Road in Raleigh, you’ll find a bunch of more authentic Latin-American dining options. One restaurant that I’ve been hitting up from time to time is Las Marias Tacos y Pupusas. It used to be La Fonda y Birriera Jalisco, before transforming in to Las Maria Tacos y Pupusas in its latest incarnation.

Las Marias Tacos y Pupusas is conveniently located across the parking lot from WalMart if you need to pick up a 12-pack of paper towels. So navigate those treacherous parking lanes and pull up into that lot that sits off of Ronald Drive. It’s a humble storefront with a big sign so you can’t miss it! Inside is where Las Marias Tacos y Pupusas starts to get really interesting. The dining space is super bright, colorful and cheerful. The pale yellow walls are accented with greenery and Mexican statuettes. The seating at Las Marias seems to be all hand-carved and painted wooden chairs, booths and tables, showing off a variety of Mexican artwork and kitsch. Looking around, each piece seemed to be unique and one-of-a-kind, very cool craftsmanship!

After you take in all the color and decor at Las Marias Tacos y Pupusas, grab a seat and peer through their deep menu. It’s multiple laminated pages and covers a variety of appetizers, dishes in beef, pork, chicken along with seafood specials. Or go the tacos and burritos route. And while Las Marias focuses on more authentic eats, they also have a page of Tex-Mex selections including fajitas and quesadillas, phew! It’s a huge array of possibilities while you dine here. Beer and margaritas are also available if you are imbibing. Looking around the dining room you’ll also find that the majority of the patrons here appear to be Mexican which is always a good sign for this foodie!

Over the course of my visits I’ve had the chance to sample several items off the menu. First, I had to try the pupusas given the name of the restaurant. Las Marias offers up a beautiful, pan-fried and griddled corn cake stuffed with some delicious melty cheese. It’s a tasty little starter served with some lightly pickled cabbage on the side along with a spicy side sauce. Very well done and filling, you don’t find a ton of pupusa options in the area.

Tacos at Las Marias are an affordable $3 each and are offered up in a variety of meats! More choices than I’ve seen at other Mexican taquerias, you can choose from: carne asada, chorizo, carnitas, al pastor, chicarron, pollo al carbon, lengua and more. I go with my favorite carnitas and while the price may seem a bit high for a taco, they are piled high with meat, shredded lettuce and topped nicely with a generous sprinkle of fresh cotija cheese! Definitely a mouthful, if you can put down more than three of these bad-boys, you have my respect.

And finally I had to try a burrito off their menu so I went again with the carnitas in their Macho burrito. Why is it called the “macho” burrito? Well the wait-person nicely cautioned me that it would be pretty spicy and is that ok? Of course I’m all in at this point and I’m not too concerned given I’m a fan of Indian and Thai food. My macho burrito comes out and it’s a nicely sized, thick burrito filled with crispy carnitas, rice, pinto beans, and more. Covered with some red sauce, melted cheese and some veggies as sides, you’ve got yourself a nice meal. Biting into the burrito you’ve got a filling mix of carbs, pork and spice and yes, it is spicy! While it doesn’t hit you at first, over the course of my meal I start getting the sniffles and realize we’ve got a solidly spicy burrito here, be forewarned!

Service at Las Marias Tacos y Pupusas is excellent, the staff is primarily female and personable. You’re seated promptly and the wait staff is patient enough to work with you through their large menu. So kudos, Las Marias Tacos y Pupusas! While I may miss the old Fonda y Birriera Jalisco, you’re doing Mexican eats just as well and have kept most everything that made it good. You’ll still find tasty, authentic Mexican cuisine for a reasonable price in a bright and cheery dining room. I’ll be back soon to take another stab at that huge menu of yours but I’m pretty sure that whatever comes out of your kitchen is going to be muy excelente!

Double your Mexican Deliciousness at Los Cuates in Raleigh!

Front of Los Cuates in Raleigh, NC Triangle Dining
Front of Los Cuates in Raleigh, NC Triangle Dining

While a lot of people in the Triangle adore Chubby’s for their Mexican food fix, there are other down-home choices.  Places where the locals eat and the food is about authentic as you can get. Out in Raleigh one of my personal favorites is Los Cuates!  Located ITB (Inside the Beltline), they’ve got one drive-thru location on Capital Boulevard and another sit-down location on Old Wake Forest Road.  Delicious burritos, tacos, salsa and more in two convenient spots.  While they both serve wonderfully inexpensive Mexican fare, I prefer to hit up the sit-down location because you’re going to need some time to finish up one of their huge meals!

Los Cuates is a small, family-owned restaurant that seems really authentic. They don’t have a website and the majority of times that I’m there, it’s mostly Mexican patrons dining there.  The family opened up Los Cuates in Raleigh after stints in Arizona and SoCal, so I’d like to think of their food as West Coast Mexican.  Inside Los Cuates it’s a bit spartan with one lone television showing off futbol and Mexican soap operas.  They’ve got the menu over the counter with no details so you’ll need to have an idea of what to order beforehand (or you may get a beef tongue taco, i.e. lengua!)  Los Cuates does the basics: tacos, burritos, and plates in a variety of meats.  Once you’re done ordering, hop on over to the salsa bar where they’ll have four choices along with some fresh veggie accompaniments.  I stick to the basic red salsas but the green guacatillo looks pretty darn good.  It’ll take about 10 minutes to get your food but a large basket of chips will tide you over until then.

For my mains, I’ve pretty much only done lunch here and it’s typically $5 – $10 for anything on the menu. I’ve tried most of the basics: pollo asado (chicken), carnitas (pork), carne asada (grilled beef), barbacoa (braised beef), lengua (tongue) and fish, which have all been solid.  The plates will come with a side of rice and beans so we’re talking about a lot of food. Drinks span from Jarritos to horchata to frescas, I recently had a tamarind fresca that was really good.  A bit tangy and really refreshing which was perfect on a hot day.  For tacos I’ve also tried the chicarron and chorizo, both interesting and awesome in different ways.  Chicarron is basically crisped up pork belly so it’s super rich with some meatiness.  The chorizo is intense and salty but the onions and cilantro take a bit of the bite out.  Los Cuates does a nice plate, the pollo asado is grilled chicken pieces along with a nice plate of refried beans and fluffy spanish rice.  The meals here are always carbalicious so be warned you’ll probably need a nap afterwards.

And if you’re super hungry, go for the carne asada burrito plate!  As the priciest item on the Los Cuates menu $10 may seem like a lot but whoa, wait’ll you see this plate…  We’re talking two burritos stuffed with steak (carne asada), pico de gallo and guacamole, yum!  Along with the usual beans and rice, if you can finish this plate by yourself, I tip my foodie hat to you!  I admit that I’m more used to the SF style burritos which are stuffed with rice and beans but these Los Cuates burritos are also pretty darn good.  Basically if you took the rice and beans they give you as sides and stuffed them in the burrito, you’d end up with the same deal.  And they do a really nice job with the burritos.  They’re griddled up a bit with a nicely browned outside.  The burrito wrapper is crisp but still has some glutinous chew to it.  Not sure how exactly they do it but awesome-sauce!

I rarely ever make it to dessert at Los Cuates because they give you so much food but they do have a couple of sweet items along with a rack of Bimbo’s sweets.  So yeah, Los Cuates is my idea of down-home Mexican food.  I’ll always enjoy Chubby’s for their fish tacos but for the basics in terms of Mexican food, Los Cuates hits the spot.  They may not be fancy, they may be a bit out of the way but for some of the best basic Mexican fare, you can’t go wrong at Los Cuates. One note, Los Cuates is one of the few places I know in the Triangle that serves up breakfast burritos and carne asada fries, dee-lish!

In espanol, los cuates means twins or friend/buddy in slang terms.  And I’d have to agree that the place is appropriately named.  After a visit or two, you’ll think that Los Cuates is your best friend when it comes to Mexican food, whether you hit up their original Old Wake Forest Road location or their drive-thru on Capital Boulevard, bueno appetito!

First Take: Gonza Tacos y Tequila Heads to the Hills

Sign for Gonza Tacos y Tequila in Raleigh- NC Triangle Dining

When you talk about Mexican and Latin American fare, Gonza Tacos y Tequila has been a long-time favorite up in N. Raleigh. But its location was just too far away to make it worthwhile to me for a visit. Flash-forward to this past week and this rapidly expanding Mexican chain has finally moved downtown in a brand spanking new location at the Aloft Hotel. So it was time to FINALLY see what Gonza Tacos y Tequila is all about…

Cool interior at Gonza Tacos y Tequila in Raleigh- NC Triangle Dining

Located on a busy corner of Hillsborough Street, parking is quite limited for a visit but be aware that Gonza has a retail/hotel private lot behind the building off of Maiden Lane. Once you find parking, you’ll be dazzled by what lies behind the doors of Gonza. An innocuous and discrete frontage opens into a kaleidoscope of colors and decor.

The rustic interior is amped up with an Andy Warhol-like Dia de los Muertos portraiture, modern wine bar area and a turquoise blue mural behind the bar. Bright star-shaped lights twinkle above and the front face of Gonza opens up to the sidewalk outside. Very well-designed space with a lot of color and charm.

I grab a seat at the bar and peruse the lunch menu which is pretty tight. I order up some queso ($5) and carnitas tacos ($11). Chips and salsa are also brought out for lunch and it’s a solid rendition. Looking around the Gonza dining room, the place is already quite busy in their 2nd week of being opened so I’m guessing they must have a pretty good reputation!

My tacos come out next, served on a long platter with leaf underneath and a side of rice. The tacos come with a single corn tortilla and are nicely stuffed but a bit small. Sprinkle of onion and cilantro on top with a side of green tomatilla sauce. The tacos are tasty with some fattiness underneath which I’d expect for carnitas. Pretty basic and par for the course, the rice is made with a bit of cilantro (I think) and corn for some extra flavor and color.

Service at the bar was excellent but hey, I was sitting with their marketing manager so no shock there and I was unexpectedly comp’ed for my lunch. In the end, I like what they’re doing here but need to come back for a re-visit and see if they’re willing to push the food and spice envelope a bit more. And for lunch it was a bit pricey for what you get but the lease here has got to be some money, eh?

My concern is that when you get a great-looking place like they new Gonza Tacos, the food and flavors get sanitized a bit to appeal to a broader, upscale audience. And Latin American food needs to have a punch of earthiness, spice and flavors in my opinion. So right now Gonza is getting four stars for me leaning on their decor and service more than their food. We’ll see how visit #2 plays out!

First Take: El Rodeo Mexican in Downtown Raleigh

Front of El Rodeo in Raleigh, NC Triangle Dining
Front of El Rodeo in Raleigh, NC Triangle Dining

When you think Mexican, I always seem to head over to Jibarra, Los Cuates or Chubby’s as my go-to but for many people, El Rodeo is their Mexican crave fave of choice.  And I can see why, they’ve got multiple locations in Raleigh and the downtown restaurant on Blount Street is perfect for a First Friday crawl.  We stopped in given the line over at Calavera and this place is your basic Mexican-American type eatery.  Bare bones and a bit busy with a broad menu spanning tacos, burritos, enchiladas, chimichangas, fajitas and more.  They whisk out a batch of chips really quickly along with a small bottle of salsa, extra baskets are $1.25 each. A side bowl of queso cheese is VERY good: rich, smooth and even a bit buttery, addictive dipping stuff.

I order up some enchiladas suiza which come out as shredded chicken stuffed in three rolls and covered with a light green sauce and sprinkled with cheese.  Not bad but a bit bland and probably not the best dish on the large menu. But no complaints for $8.75, the prices here are really decent. My friend’s fajitas also looks pretty darn good.

Service is quick and efficient so if you’re looking to eat quickly, I’ve got the Mexican place for you!  My beer is on special so my whole meal comes out to under $15 with tax and tip, a great deal given El Rodeo’s downtown location and decent food.  While El Rodeo may not be my Mexican food joint of choice I can see how families and young adults may really like the place.  Think decent quality Mexican favorites at value prices and you’ve got yourself a semi-winner in my book!
