Travel: Creative Sushi & Omakase at Kumi in Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas

KumiLasVegas-FrontEntrance

When it comes to business conferences, you’re usually treated to an endless line of steam trays filled with over-cooked chicken, fish along with hard rolls and a cold pat of butter. But it is definitely a nice treat to get off the ranch and try something a bit more special. At IBM InterConnect 2016 at Mandalay Bay it was Kumi restaurant that made up for that industrial hotel food and boy, did it ever!

Conveniently located just north of the convention centers and across from Aureole, Kumi is a bustling hip spot drawn up in a bit of sexy ambiance. Small bar up front, two main dining rooms with a side room for small groups, the space has a very warm feel and offers up a mix of Japanese and Korean on the menu. I managed to stop in for two visits, the first for omakase which is the chef’s choice from $65 to $150 per person. Rolls a la carte on the menu run in the $21 – $28 area, appetizers in the $10 – $15 range.

While the main dining room is appealing with a nice view of the sushi bar, the second dining room in back is spectacular! Circular and glowing underneath a jumble of a lit stick structure overhead. Wish I could describe it better but it looked good! Cherry blossom wallpaper fills out the rest of this special dining room in back.

For our first meal, we did the $90 omakase which consisted of 10 or so plates brought to the table ranging from warm apps to sushi-sashimi and ending up in hot entrees. There were a slew of great flavors but some favorites included the sashimi plate which include clam and octopus, poached lobster and sizzling filet mignon plate.

Really nicely done and not a bad deal for Mandalay Bay at the price. Unfortunately since the meal was the chef’s choice, I’m not really sure what we ate for the evening! With a smaller group, service at the table was excellent for the evening.

For visit #2 we went a la carte, with a little bit of edamame to start the meal and sushi for my main. I went with the pork belly and hot mess rolls which were well-reviewed online. But I was totally tempted to try Kumi’s pop rockin roll which caught my eye. The sushi here is obviously pretty creative and untraditional but what would you expect for Las Vegas? The pork belly roll is presented as 8 pieces and covered with a slaw, delicious stuff. And the hot mess is crab and poke with some Screaming O sauce, a spicy concoction drizzled on table-side. It’s a pleasantly spicy sauce with just enough heat. Service for this second meal was pretty stilted and challenged but with a conference of 20,000+ people going on next door, not a total surprise.

What can I say but Kumi hit all the high spots for me during my week in Las Vegas. While I do think the sushi and rolls here are pretty darn good, they are probably enhanced by the great ambiance. Think very good, but not great. However when you tie in the ambiance and decor it certainly rises above the average for what you can typically find around here. So enjoy Kumi for the sushi, decor and experience!

First Take: M Sushi in Durham For Fresh & Simply Delicious Sushi!

Front of M Sushi, Durham- NC Triangle Dining
Front of M Sushi, Durham- NC Triangle Dining

As a long-time fan of Sono and Chef Mike Lee in downtown Raleigh, I’ve had the chance to enjoy his food across many visits to his restaurant, Competition Cooking and even a pop-up dinner. But over the years like many long-time favorites, you sort of forget about them. Especially when I’m usually chasing down new restaurants in the Triangle. Thankfully Chef Mike has doubled-down in the Triangle, opening up M Sushi out in Durham. By happenstance I was in the area and popped in for an impromptu meal at M Sushi and you can color me impressed!

M Sushi is located in a quiet area of E. Chapel Hill Street with a side-entrance that’s not obvious from the street front.  Inside, the space is long and narrow with a sushi bar to the right and seating around the edges to the left. The exposed beams overhead and brickwork give the restaurant a rustic and minimalist feel to the dining room. The sushi bar is busy with 4 – 5 chefs including Chef Mike working hard to feed the busy crowd on a Wednesday night. The restaurant is pretty full even though M Sushi has only been open a week, a very good sign.

We get lucky after a short wait and are seated at a 4-top on the side. Scanning the M Sushi menu, it looks short, simple but also interesting. The sushi options look somewhat traditional but with a slightly modern spin. I order up some steamed buns, the unagi maki role (eel) and a spider roll (salmon/tuna/soft-shell crab) for my meal while my friends try the light omakase (chef’s choice) and some other rolls.

With some warm sake to keep me company while I wait, I scan the room and it’s an eclectic and more mature crowd. And I have to believe there are some serious foodies here given how new M Sushi is! Our buns arrive first and you’re not going to believe it but it’s an “eel bun”, seared unagi with crisp salmon skin, hoisin and a pickle. Usually this type of steamed bun is done with pork belly but this version with the eel is fantastico! The eel is meaty, rich and dense and the crispy skin and soft bun play off of each other. Really good stuff, I would have liked a bit more tang in the pickle but it was great as is.

Next up is my unagi/eel roll with a soy glaze in 6 large pieces. It’s a beautiful cross-section of delicious fish, rice and fun. The slices are large but it’s well-rolled and holds together for a large mouthful of subtle flavors and great texture. My final roll is the spider roll which comes with what seems like a whole fried soft shell crab crawling out of the roll. With some radish slices for decor, it’s a delicious hit of fried crab and fresh fish against the soft, supple sushi rice. Nicely done again!

As the meal continues, I enjoy the burst of colors coming from my table-mate’s omakase dishes. A bright crudo in broth along with a beautiful chirashi in a bowl. Chef Mike is about blending textures and taste in a more subtle fashion for the palate but let’s loose with the colors in his presentation. Service throughout the meal was good but I suspect it will get even better as the operations for M Sushi gets locked down with time and experience.

I really enjoyed my meal at M Sushi and while it’s VERY different from its sister restaurant in Raleigh, I think it may be even better. More muted in its decor, smaller more traditional menu but everything here feels very respectful to the fish and dining experience. And I’m pretty sure if you like sushi you’ll love what Chef Mike has in store for you. Durham, you are pretty lucky to have M Sushi in town since we’ve been enjoying Chef Mike’s cuisine out in Raleigh for years. You might need a reservation, you might have to wait but make sure you give the newest and hottest sushi spot in Triangle a try as soon as you can!

First Take: Wasabi in Cary Dishes Out Good Food But Not Enough Spice

Front of Wasabi in Cary, NC Triangle Dining
Front of Wasabi in Cary, NC Triangle Dining

Over in Mac Gregor Village you’ll find a handful of restaurants set off of 64 in a plaza.  Cilantro, Tribute Pizza, Tony’s Oyster Bar, Jimmy V’s and also the lesser-known, Wasabi!   With a mixed Japanese-Thai menu, Wasabi mimics the more popular Sushi-Thai with its offerings spanning the Asian continent.  And after my second visit, I think it’s a decent choice but just doesn’t quite rock the house for me.  Here’s why…

Dining area at Wasabi in Cary, NC Triangle Dining

Inside Wasabi opens up to a large dining room with a busy bar area full of Japanese decorations.  In my head it looks more like typical Japanese restaurant that added Thai as opposed to Thai-Sushi which feels like it went the other way around.  The menu spans the usual culprits, sushi, tempura, teriyaki, Thai noodles and curries along with a smattering of house specials.  I order up the pad thai with chicken for lunch which comes with soup and salad for a reasonable $8. The living room is a bit busy with the Cary crowd which is nice to see.

It only takes 10 minutes or so for our food which is great for an abbreviated lunch period.  The salad with ginger dressing looks basic but fine, the miso soup falls in the same category: ok!  My main shows up and it’s a generous portion of flat noodles with bits of egg, nice slices of white meat chicken along with nice bits of scrambled egg and scallions.  A nice sprinkle of crushed peanuts on top completes the dish!  While all the parts of Wasabi’s pad thai was decently cooked (tender noodles, stir-fried chicken and good egg), the dish just came off a bit flat for me.  As if an ingredient or two was missing in the pad thai.  There’s a long ingredient list for pad thai which is why I’d rather just order it when dining out.  But maybe the tamarind sauce?  The dish was just missing that sweet and sour element you usually get in Thai food.  I wrapped up half the dish to bring home, thankfully the portion size was solid!

Service at Wasabi was good and you’re able to get in and out for lunch pretty quickly, woohoo!  But I did eat my leftovers that night and it didn’t get any better after sitting around so I stand by my original assessment.  Wasabi, you’re doing a decent job but just missing the flava that I usually associate with good Thai eats.  Or maybe I just chose off the wrong side of the menu, I guess I’ll have to try Japanese for my next visit, bon appetit!

Ajisai Japanese Fusion in Cameron Village, Raleigh

Front of Ajisai Japanese in Raleigh- NC Triangle Dining
Front of Ajisai Japanese in Raleigh- NC Triangle Dining

Located in busy Cameron Village, Ajisai brings very hip and urban sense to sushi for the area!  Dining at Cameron Village can be a bit hit or miss but things are definitely looking up with the arrival of Ajisai along  with the great eats at Tazza Kitchen. And what’s great about Ajisai is that it shows quite a bit of style in addition to serving up great food.  Are you curious?  Then read on, friend…

If you’re looking for Ajisai in Cameron Village just head on over to the section where you’ve got the ABC store and Piccolo Italia.  Ajisai sits in the old space that used to be Sushi Gami.  From the outside you’ll notice the sidewalk seating and the discrete sign but inside, things start to brighten up.  You’ll notice the sleek sushi bar backed by ornate chrome panels and blue LED lighting (which can be color-changed from what I’ve been told).  Japanese characters and script decorate the bar-wall and you’ve got a purple interior paint spiced up with some large prints of some lovely Japanese ladies.  I grabbed a seat at the booth and took a look at the menu.  Prices about standard in the area for sushi, Ajisai does lunch specials from Monday to Saturday from 11am to 4pm but I chose to visit on a Sunday lunch, boo!  I order up some tempura along with a sushi combo of three rolls (yellowtail jalapeno roll, spicy tuna roll and crunchy salmon roll).  It’s time to hang loose and waits for mah food!

It’s pretty quiet at Ajisai at noon time but people start floating in about 12:30 pm or so.  My miso soup shows up and it’s a bit different.  Spiked with bits of green onion, mung beans and small bits of tofu, the cloudy miso portion separates readily from the broth and it’s quite good.  My tempura app shows up and it looks great.  Five pieces of perfectly fried shrimp, sweet potato, broccoli and something else.  I can never figure out all the veggies that they use in tempura!  The coating is crisp and crunchy, definitely recommend trying the tempura out as an appetizer.

And then my sushi main shows up: six pieces of each roll, they are small and tightly wound.  I’ll confess that I’m not a sushi expert and still got the training wheels on so I ordered some basics.  But I can tell you that rice is quite good on these rolls and the fish melted in my mouth.  The yellowtail roll wrapped in nori with the jalapeno kick was my favorite.  But overall a good taste experience but I think I filled up a bit too much on the tempura!

Service at Ajisai was decent but seemed a bit stilted.  The staff on the front of the house seemed a bit young to me but maybe that was just because it was a Sunday afternoon and not a prime time service period.  But it was fine and the food was good at Ajisai.  I’ll have to come back and try out a bit more off the menu but I could walk over here so I’m sure I’ll re-visit soon.  So yes, welcome to Cameron Village Ajisai and you’re off to a great, foodie start!

Sushi O Bistro, Raleigh For Delicious Pan-Asian Cuisine

Front of Sushi O Bistro, Raleigh- NC Triangle Dining
Front of Sushi O Bistro, Raleigh- NC Triangle Dining

If you’ve spent any time on S. Glenwood in Raleigh, you know what the story is.  Crazy crowds on the weekends, clubbers walking about in 5″ heels and Ed Hardy t-shirts.  Restaurants and food is always of the pizza and food cart variety but if you look closely, there are some decent eating spots.  Take Sushi O Bistro for example.  I had walked by this place probably dozens of times since it opened but never really bothered to eat here.  There was always a crowd on its sidewalk dining area but I never really had anyone want to go visit.  And yes, the pan-Asian (Japanese, Thai, Chinese) had me a bit worried but it was finally time to stop in for a meal!

Bar at Sushi O Bistro, Raleigh- NC Triangle Dining

Located right next to 518 West and next to DeMo’s Pizza, Sushi O has a pretty unassuming store-front and a busy sidewalk seating area.  Inside, Sushi O presents the same feel.  Bar on the left, crowded with tables and chairs, TV’s over the bar.  It feels a bit hectic and thrown together given that many sushi and Japanese restaurants go for a more ascetic and spartan feel.  Again, going back to the pan-Asian menu I’m expecting a more American-ized dining experience.

Crab rangoon at Sushi O Bistro, Raleigh- NC Triangle Dining

We grab some seats on the side and get our menus for the evening.  With a large range of Japanese, Thai and Chinese, Sushi O provides a lot of options if you’re not sure what you want.  But as usual, I’m suspicious about the quality of eats that you’re going to get with a menu this diverse.  We order up some edamame, crab rangoon, a Hurricane roll along with another special roll for the day and red curry with beef!  Thankfully, Sushi O does a BOGO special for lunch and dinner along with 1/2 price hot sake special for the evening.  The starters are good.  The crab rangoon were perfectly fried and stuffed well with cheese and crab, a fun and flavorful appetizer.  We moved into the sushi which was a fried roll with tuna, salmon, yellowtail and avocado, yummy.  The daily special roll with jalapeno had a decent kick and came stuffed with crab, mango and avocado.  I thought the rolls were solid and a bit fancy but decently done.

And finally, we end with red curry which had plenty of bamboo shoots, beef and onion.  A good version of a Thai classic and reasonably well-done.  Service at Sushi O was solid but they do hire younger folks here as staff which means you can end up in a hit or miss service situation.  Overall, the place reminds me of a version of Sushi-Thai which does a decent job with a wide menu but does cater to a more Americanized clientele. But that’s not a surprise given Sushi O’s S. Glenwood location.  But colored me slightly impressed because they did a better job than I expected with the food and flavors.  So thanks so much Sushi O for my dinner visit!  I will be back sometime soon to work a bit more off your menu…
