CowBar Burgers & Fries in Raleigh for Beefy Perfection at North Hills

When it comes to new restaurants in the Triangle, I’m always excited to see something new and different. Because it’s SO hard to really raise the bar when it comes to a tried and true item like a hamburger. But every now and then you hit a new place, serving up an old standby, that does stand out. And I have to say that CowBar Burgers and Fries fills in that category. While they have been in the Morgan Street Food Hall for years, the opening of their stand-alone restaurant over in North Hills brings their burgers to another level!

If you’ve ever been to the CowBar at Morgan Street Food Hall, you know the drill. It’s loud, noisy, and chaotic with tons of people milling about. Not the most relaxing dining situation. CowBar Burger & Fries has a very similar menu but it just feels TOTALLY different in a good way. Located in the old B. Good space in the newer section of North Hills across from the greens area, there’s tons of space to stretch out here, including a nice covered patio to the left side. The main dining room is light and bright with tables sporting butcher block tops, similar to a barbeque joint.

Inside you’ll find a nice fast-casual, counter order set up with a cash register in front. Scan the menu on the screens overhead and thankfully, CowBar keeps things simple with eight burgers/beef sandwiches, five hot dogs, and even four vegan burger options. Gluten-free buns are available upon request. An assortment of fries and milkshakes round out this classic grill menu. But don’t be fooled by the simplicity of the menu, there’s some deliciousness along with calories here!

Once you order, you’ll get a number on your receipt and it’s time to self-serve your drink in the back left section of the dining area. Note that CowBar is still working on its beer-liquor license as of early May. At the soft drink area, you’ll also find the napkins, condiments, and a tool chest that holds plastic utensils and soda cup lids. Service has been pretty quick during my visits, expect to wait ten minutes or so while your food is cooked to order.

Now CowBar is all about the beef as you would expect, whether in burger or hot dog form. The burgers ARE stellar, some of the best I’ve had in the area. The truffle burger is a mouthful of umami sporting two juicy patties, smoked gouda cheese, caramelized onions, and truffle butter. Biting into this burger is an eye-rolling moment, a hit of savory flavor to the tastebuds. All the elements work great together with that truffle flavor and richness. The Alabama Slammer is loaded with American cheese, bacon, Alabama white sauce, and fried onion bits. Another delicious bite with more smoky flavor and texture than the truffle burger but equally good.

CowBar’s Southern hot dog is loaded up with fresh, crisp slaw, red onion pieces, and a swirl of yellow mustard, Super satisfying and super messy! You may need a fork to eat this bad boy! And the fries at CowBar are also excellent: skin-on in three different types. The Italiano features shredded parmesan cheese, rosemary, garlic, and pepper, a perfect accompaniment to any of the main items.

Throughout the space, you’ll find whimsical murals of cow-focused art and murals along with some wood barrels, beer signage, and more. All in all, I find it much more satisfying to enjoy one of their great burgers here in this space versus the loud and overly busy dining room at Morgan Street Food Hall. Each spot serves its own purpose but most likely I will be making the drive up to North Hills, moving forward.

I’m really happy with what CowBar Burger is doing here and I knew that they would be good. The upgraded space just allows you to truly enjoy the food they are putting out here and the burgers are excellent. When your menu is focused on such a basic menu item as a burger, pizza, or taco, it can be hard to elevate your menu to the next level but CowBar has done just that. If you’re a burger lover, make the effort to drop in here for a meal. They are doing a lot of things right and on the way out, you’ll be ruminating how they managed to make beef taste so good. And you may get a gentle, mooing reminder at the door.

Hot Dogs, Peanuts, Beer and Other Fun Food at the Durham Bulls Ballpark

Durham Bulls Ballpark - NC Triangle Dining Durham Bulls Ballpark – NC Triangle Dining

Nothing says summer time like a beer and hotdog at the ballpark and thankfully we’ve got one of the best minor league teams in town, the Durham Bulls. The Durham Bulls are riding high after winning the 2021 Triple-A National Championship. And while you might not find Crash Davis or Nuke LaLoosh at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, what you will find is top-notch baseball and great ballpark food! While I covered some of the great food choices around DPAC and the American Tobacco Campus next door in earlier posts, let’s dive right in to find out what the best eats are behind those brick walls. Whether you’re in the mood for a hot dog, shaved ice, fries, or more, it’s time to eat AND play ball!

Durham Bulls stretching before a ball game - nctriangledining.com Durham Bulls stretching before a ball game – nctriangledining.com

(Post updated for 2022 season!)  If you’ve got tickets to a Durham Bulls game, gates open an hour before the game. It’s a good time to catch all the pre-game warm-ups and get autographs from some rising baseball stars (especially if you’re a little kid). The Durham Bulls always run a lot of game specials: Fireworks on Friday and Saturday night games (starting May 28), Kids run the bases on Sundays after the game, and Bark in the Park (bring your dog into the outfield seats).

New in 2022 for food is Kids Eat Free on Wednesdays! Check in at the Lowes Food Guest Services stand and children will get a voucher for a free hot dog, chips, and soda. Afforda-BULL Thursdays are also back with $2 hot dogs and Pepsi products, $3 nachos with cheese, $4 sausages and chips, and $5 burgers, chicken tenders, and select beers.

Also new for 2022 are the unique concessions food items, below:

  • Carolina Cue Dog: Sahlens’ Grilled For You hot dog topped with BBQ pork and coleslaw
  • Boom Boom Hot dog: This hot dog includes slaw, Boom Boom sauce, bacon and is topped with crunchy Cheetos.
  • Pig Kahuna Sausage: Lowes Foods Sausageworks pineapple teriyaki sausages topped with pineapple slaw and sweet & spicy boom boom sauce
  • BBQ Loaded Sweet Potato Tots: Sweet potato tater tots topped with BBQ pork and nacho cheese
  • Street Tacos, Nachos, Chips and Guacamole, and Roasted Corn from El Jefecito: Durham’s own El Jefecito food truck and restaurant will be set up near the Compass Real Estate Left Field Gate with street tacos, nachos, chips and guacamole, and roasted corn

The Durham Bulls will also be having monthly foodie experiences – Wine Pairing (April 27), Brunch (May 30), Low Country Boil (June 15), Caribbean (July 6), Fiesta (August 25), and Oktoberfest (September 5) along with a foodie mini-plan to enjoy these special events. The new concessions and food map (above) will help you find some of what you need.  More menu pictures from the 2022 season are below to help you get a feel for concession prices at the ballpark.

Climb up the concrete steps at the main entrance and you’ll find the concessions stands are all decorated with a consistent, wood siding motif, all looking quite spiffy. You’ll find your usual hot dogs, burgers, sausages, pretzels, fries, and beer options along the 1st and 3rd base sides of the stadium concourse. Note: There are more concessions on the 1st base, right-field side of the concourse since it’s the home team side!

The concessions are all well-marked and usually offer candy, peanuts, popcorn, and more. Pretty much all the eats at the Durham Bulls ballpark are under $10 (most $4 to $8) so it’s not expensive to eat at this ballpark! Note that some Durham Bulls tickets come loaded with $5 worth of concessions and beer credit, double-check your ticket. What’s really cool is that the Durham Bulls Ballpark has brought in some local businesses for concessions so keep an eye out for these specialty spots!

In the center of the concourse, you’ll find the very popular Pie Pushers pizza! Pie Pushers does an excellent NY thin-crust slice of za, and it’s only $25 for a whole pepperoni pizza! Hog Heaven Barbeque is also in the front of the concessions area, serving up NC barbeque and other Southern favorites. There’s also a Foothills beer garden for a leisurely sip of beer.

At the front of the concourse you’ll also find a variety of local food stands. It’s really a fun way to enjoy some uniquely Durham spots and their eats! Lemonade, funnel cakes, cotton candy, and more. There’s a bit of a state fair feel to these little stands.

Out on the left-field side of the park, you’ll find El Jefecito, a Mexican restaurant that’s also a food truck. An attached bar makes for a nice space to hang out and enjoy a drink.

Jackie's Landing Bar in right field at Durham Bulls ballpark - nctriangledining.com Jackie’s Landing Bar in right field at Durham Bulls ballpark – nctriangledining.com

Out in right field you’ll also find a terrace area offering up some other delicious options underneath blue skies. First up is a full patio bar (Jackie’s Landing) complete with craft brews and cocktails so you can have an adult beverage in style! Behind the bar you’ll find Smokebox Barbeque serving up barbeque and smoked meats. And further in you’ll find the Wool E. World children’s play area along with some additional food stands. Note that there are also two beer stands down the left and right-field sides of the ballpark seating areas on the walkway. Super-convenient for a craft beer and they save you a walk to the concourse.

The Durham Bulls have quite a few promotions and specials going down, check their promotions schedule for the latest information!

In addition to the great ballpark and food, I really love how the Durham Bulls entertain the crowd beyond the action on the field. Sumo-wrestling, gunning t-shirts into the crowd, kids catching bean bags in their pants, Wool E Bull racing around the field in a go-kart, there’s always something happening between innings! And fireworks on Friday and Saturday night games are always super festive. The Durham Bulls are really minor league baseball at its very best…

Now how can you not enjoy a great night of Triple-A baseball, food, and fresh air?! Given the Durham Bulls are part of the Tampa Bay Rays farm system, you’re guaranteed to see a future major-leaguer during your visits here. And I really can’t think of a better way to spend a warm summer evening than at the Durham Bulls ballpark munching on fries, dogs, and custard, bon appetit!

So what’s your guilty pleasure at the ballpark? Fess up people!

First Take: Sup Dogs in Chapel Hill for Creative and Tasty Hot Dogs

Sup Dogs in Chapel Hill - NC Triangle Dining
Sup Dogs in Chapel Hill – NC Triangle Dining

If you’re out on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, you know you’re going to have a bunch of dining choices but in the category of basic and simple, perfect for a college kid. You can’t expect upscale or fancy or frou-frou, just simple and filling eats. And that’s where Sup Dogs comes into play. A veritable hot dog emporium offering an array of weiners and grill items along with a bit of college spirit. As long as you’re not a Duke fan! Here’s how my visit to this casual college eatery played out…

Dining area at Sup Dogs in Chapel Hill - NC Triangle Dining
Dining area at Sup Dogs in Chapel Hill – NC Triangle Dining

From the outside, the first thing you’ll notice about Sup Dogs is the patio. Under cover and shaded high-top tables with condiment dispensers on each one, it looks like a great spot to grab lunch and some fresh air. The Sup Dogs signage up above lists off the primary food items on the menu and one short and pointed message to the college down Tobacco Road in a darker shade of blue (a continuing theme). Inside Sup Dogs you’ll find a large open dining room decked out in brick, wood and a lot of Carolina blue signage. The young wait staff is clad in black and Carolina blue so you definitely know you’re in Chapel Hill!

I grab a seat at the bar for lunch and take some time to dig deeper into the Sup Dogs menu. Thankfully, the menu here is pretty simple: burgers, chicken sandwich and the namesake Sup Dogs along with a litany of fried sides! Most of their dogs are in the $5.99 range with fries but you can upgrade to tots or cheese fries for an extra $1.00 or to bacon cheese fries or cheesy tots for $1.50. And if you add an extra dog, it’s only a $1.00. I’m doubling down for lunch with two dogs AND bacon cheese fries, gulp…  As I’m waiting for my food, a table of Duke fans sit down for lunch and notice all the smack talk signage on the walls but thankfully they take it all in good fun and stay!

Smokehouse, Western dogs and cheese fries at Sup Dogs in Chapel Hill - NC Triangle Dining
Smokehouse, Western dogs and cheese fries at Sup Dogs in Chapel Hill – NC Triangle Dining

It takes 10 minutes or so for my food and wow, it’s a lot! I’ve ordered up the Smokehouse and Western dogs which come sitting on top of a aluminum tray along with my cheese fries! Sides of Sup sauce and ranch complete the meal. The Western dog (onion ring, BBQ sauce, Monterey Jack, cheddar cheese and chili) and the Smokehouse dog (bacon, Monterey Jack, cheddar cheese, Sup Dog sauce, and chili) come loaded with toppings. And they are good sized beef dogs which can stand up to all the toppings. And they’re both quite good, I like the creative options on the Sup Dogs menu. Digging in the bacon cheese fries feels like another 1,000 calories but I can’t resist! The fries have a bit of skin and great potato taste. The cheese and bacon bits are generously coated on the pile of fries, too. And the Sup Sauce is wonderful, probably a tangy, savory Thousand Island mix that is perfect for dipping. All in all it’s a filling meal with plenty of salt, grease and deliciousness!

Collegiate decor at Sup Dogs in Chapel Hill - NC Triangle Dining
Collegiate decor at Sup Dogs in Chapel Hill – NC Triangle Dining

The staff here is pretty young, probably from the UNC student body but do a good job keeping my drink cup filled and check in on me regularly. And while I don’t think you should be eating here regularly due to health reasons, it’s definitely a fun lunch stop and would probably be even better after a few beers on Franklin Street. If you’re interested in hot dogs, I definitely believe that Sup Dogs is a great choice in the Triangle for its variety and value in this category. If I lived in the area, I’d definitely be back from time to time. And I’m glad I finally know, what’s up dog!

First Take: Steve’s Place in N. Raleigh for an Honest Southern Style Hot Dog

Front of Steve's Place in Raleigh - NC Triangle Dining
Front of Steve’s Place in Raleigh – NC Triangle Dining

While it’s always fun to eat fancy and frou-frou, sometimes it’s great to get back to the basics. And the basics is what you’ll get at a little eatery named Steve’s Place in Raleigh. I had run into several 5-star reviews for Steve’s Place online and talk about its hot dogs. So I couldn’t resist stopping in as I was heading north on Capital Boulevard for a quick lunch and bite.

Order counter at Steve's Place in Raleigh - NC Triangle Dining
Order counter at Steve’s Place in Raleigh – NC Triangle Dining

Steve’s Place sits in the busy little Plantation Square plaza along with Baker’s Dozen Donuts 2 (ooooh). I circled the small parking lot a bit before spying the green and white Hot Dogs sign overhead and a “Steves” neon sign below, success! Inside, Steve’s Place is pretty basic and bare-bones. It has a deli-like feel with green and white tiles, some stand-up high-boy tables along with a order form counter to the left. And I look overhead, the ceiling is covered with baseball caps, cool!

Order form area and ceiling covered with hats at Steve's Place in Raleigh - NC Triangle Dining

I’m on a bit of a schedule today so thankfully, the Steve’s Place menu is small and simple: deli sandwiches, hot dogs, soups and salads. But I’ve got hot dogs on the brain, today! At the order form area, you’ll find some brightly colored slips of paper where you can customize your order. For hot dogs, Steve’s Place offers up a beef hot dog, red (pork-beef), turkey, smoked beef, kielbasa and sausage. I’m going for a classic foot-long red with mustard, chili, onions and cheese. Pretty much a North Carolina hot dog standard along with some macaroni salad as the side. You can choose from chips, slaw, potato salad and deviled eggs as a side in addition to that macaroni salad.

My food takes 5 or 10 minutes to come out so I know it’s being cooked to order. My name is called out and I’m handed over a cup of macaroni salad and my long, hot dog! It all looks pretty tasty and fresh, I dig into the macaroni salad which is wonderful. Served cold with tender elbows, chopped red onions and peppers, the light sweet dressing is perfect on this very hot day. And the hot dog is excellent as these hot dogs go. Plenty of chopped white onions, rich chili and the tang of mustard. The bun is lightly toasted, it’s a good hot dog here at Steve’s Place. So in about 30 minutes I’m in, fueled up and out the door which is what Steve’s Place is about. A casual, quick-stop for lunch offering up some fresh sandwiches, salads and hot dogs with some classic Southern flavors. And sometimes that’s exactly what you need for lunch, thanks Steve!

First Take: Snoopy’s for a Classic Chili-Dog and Grill Experience!

Outside of Snoopy's in Raleigh, NC Triangle Dining
Outside of Snoopy’s in Raleigh, NC Triangle Dining

Snoopy’s is about as much about old-school Raleigh as its next-door neighbor, Char-Grill.  But while both are known for their late-night grill munchies, Snoopy’s does it hot doggie-style!  With several locations in the Raleigh area, my local favorite is out on the corner of Hillsborough and Glenwood Avenue, perfect after a night out on the town…

Service window at Snoopy's in Raleigh, NC Triangle Dining
Service window at Snoopy’s in Raleigh, NC Triangle Dining

Parking at this little red building can be a bit tight but thankfully, Snoopy’s is walkable from a lot of the activity on S. Glenwood.  Small overhang with two service windows, Snoopy’s does a lot of basic grill items ranging from burgers, dogs and chicken tenders along with barbeque and chicken salad sandwiches.  My usual order is a couple of dogs with everything on it and their popular crinkle cut fries.  Unlike Char-Grill, the service here at Snoopy’s is fast, you’ll usually get your order within 5 or so minutes in a little paper bag.

Wrapped dogs at Snoopy's in Raleigh, NC Triangle Dining
Wrapped dogs at Snoopy’s in Raleigh, NC Triangle Dining

The dogs at Snoopy are wrapped up in white butcher paper and given the buns are steamed, it’ll sometimes stick to the paper as you’re unwrapping your meal!  Two long-ish dogs slathered with meaty chili, covering some mustard, yum.  Take a bite and you’ll get hit with a lot of savoriness and the underlying tang of mustard.  They’re pretty filling so I’m guessing two or three will fill most people up.  The fries here are probably frozen but well-cooked with just the right amount of crinkle crispness and potato.  The onion rings at Snoopy’s are also really tasty and worth sharing between two people.

Unwrapped dogs at Snoopy's in Raleigh, NC Triangle Dining
Unwrapped dogs at Snoopy’s in Raleigh, NC Triangle Dining

When most people visit Snoopy’s, they do the $6.44 special of two dogs, fries and drinks which is reasonable but not a fan-tastic deal compared to say, Cook Out.  But if you hit up Snoopy’s on Tuesday’s for Dollar Dog days, you’ll do much better.  While the food at Snoopy’s is really basic, it satisfies some odd and weird underlying food cravings in me.  I mean I know the food isn’t good for you but who wants to live forever?  So don’t miss out on this little red hot dog stand at the end of Glenwood.  You may not feel great in the morning but you’ll be thankful you stopped by for at least 15 minutes…
