First Take: Lüke in New Orleans- Brassy, Franco-Germanic Dining

Front of Luke Restaurant, New Orleans- NC Triangle Dining

During my visit to New Orleans I had a conference to work at and I wanted to set up a team dinner for everyone helping out.  While my first choice was Cochon, the limited menu makes it tough for a group dining experience so I moved over to Lüke, a well-known New Orleans restaurant from local chef, John Besh.  When you talk about New Orleans restaurants and famous chefs, you get the usuals mentioned: Prudhomme, Emile Lagasse, the Brennans, Don Link and John Besh.  So his reputation preceded the experience and I’m glad so say that dining at Lüke met all my expectations for a great New Orleans meal!

Out front, Lüke presents a very reserved demeanor.  Small store-front, discrete and subdued signage.  Inside the action picks up with the classic brasserie experience and decor, you feel as if you might have gone back a 100 years or so.  The staff is all decked out in black pants and white coats to enhance that feel and the side oyster bar acts as a central activity spot with lots of folks congregating for cocktails and seafood.  Interestingly enough, Lüke is split up into two dining rooms with a lovely hotel foyer in between.  The space smells and feels of a classic New Orleans experience from times gone by.

My group of 11 people gets seated in the back room for larger parties, we’ve got one wait person for the party which surprised me a bit.  She’s young but seems confident enough, I have to believe they train their staff well here.  We order up some wine for the table and Lüke also has a short menu of special cocktails.  For the table we get four sharable apps ranging from roasted oysters to an onion tart, pork rillette (pate) and crawfish boudin.  I only was able to get tastes of the roasted oysters (delicious, au gratin style) along with the onion tart which was more like a flavorful white pizza, great start Lüke!

With three bottles of wine and cocktails flowing, this back dining room can get a bit loud but not to worry cause the food is great so far!  My main entree of choucroute garnie maison is a beast of a dish!  Medium sized cast-iron platter with a large sausage, pork shank, pork belly, sauerkraut and let’s throw in some new potatoes for good measure.  I eye it warily for a couple of minutes trying to find a weak spot and decide where to start but who wants to live forever?!  The bratwurst is the easiest meat to start with.  This plump firm sausage paired with the slightly sweet and tangy sauerkraut makes for a nice forkful!  The pork belly is nicely braised and tender but probably not my favorite preparation for this deliciously fatty meat.  And that brontosaurus-like pork shank?  I take to it with fork and knife carving off pieces of tender meat and only get about half way through.  There is a LOT of food in this pan and it’s all heavy-weight eats so I barely touch the potatoes.  I tap out and watch the rest of the meal at the table.  The lamb meatballs special, a Lüke burger which looks fantastic and more.  Everyone is tearing into their food and enjoying it tremendously which makes me happy about my choice.

After the main, some folks finished off with coffee, creme brulee (which I tried, super-creamy) and a bread pudding with thumbs up all around.  The check comes out and I split the bill with one of my co-workers and we are D-O-N-E!  Great meal, solid service and an excellent dining experience all around.  John Besh certainly knows how to put out some good food and I really loved the atmosphere here.  From the classic raw bar, split dining rooms, sharp looking staff and Continental interior, dinner at Lüke transports you 3,000 miles away to Europe.  And while I thought all the food was very good, some of my dining companions said it was the best they’ve had of said meal.  So maybe I’m just being a bit tough on the menu.  But overall, I’d definitely come back and recommend Lüke to anyone else looking for a classic meal experience with tasty albeit, heavy cuisine.  Great job Chef Besh and appreciate all the fantastic food we enjoyed at Lüke Restaurant!

First Take: Vin Rouge for Classic French Cafe Fare

Front of Vin Rouge in Durham, NC Triangle Dining
Front of Vin Rouge in Durham, NC Triangle Dining

Way out on Ninth Street in Durham, after all the casual sandwich and pizza eateries you’ll find two restaurants sharing a parking lot, Blu Seafood and Vin Rouge.  As two of the fancier restaurants on the strip, both of these spots are Durham classics and I finally got in to try Vin Rouge for a quick meal.  From the outside Vin Rouge is a bit bland: bright yellow awning, dim lighting and gravel parking lot.  Step inside and you’ll be hit with wonderful smells coming out of the open kitchen.  You’ll immediately notice a crowded cafe like space with a small hostess stand right out in front.  I grabbed a seat at the classic bar in the main dining room, there looks to be two other dining rooms in the back and on the side of Vin Rouge but I wasn’t able to check them out.  Vin Rouge has a warm continental feel to the space albeit a bit cramped. The menu is in the $15 – $30 entree range which means it’s a touch above-average in price but that’s not unusual for French food.   I ordered up the classic steak frites, hangar steak version.

Fifteen minutes later I get a large oval platter with a heaping pile of crispy fried, greens and a small strip of steak charred well-done.  A nice balanced meal of veggies, carbs and protein with an emphasis on quality over quantity.  The fries were excellent, heavily salted and crispy but a great side.  The steak was a bit chewy and cooked medium-well as I ordered, I’m good with chewy because hanger steak is not about a soft texture, it’s all about taste-texture and this small steak had plenty!  Paired with a light bleu cheese sauce, it made for a nice flavorful meal.  Service at the bar was excellent, Vin Rouge is very well-staffed and trained but since they’ve been around for a while, I’d expect that to be the case.  Overall Vin Rouge struck me as a very traditional, classic French bistro and I’d like to come back for a full meal in one of the side rooms.  One concern I do have is the open kitchen which is great from a visual perspective but the main dining room picks up all the odors coming from the kitchen!  Not a bad thing but it skews your taste a bit given your smell and taste are connected.  But yeah, a nice bon appetit to Vin Rouge and I’ll be back!

Rue Cler, Durham For a French Bistro Feel and Fare

Front of Rue Cler in Durham, NC Triangle Dining
Front of Rue Cler in Durham, NC Triangle Dining

Tucked away off of Chapel Hill Street not too far from DPAC is the tried and true, Rue Cler!  A french bistro and restaurant, I had visited Rue Cler years ago on a Taste Carolina food tour and have intermittently come back to visit from time to time.  For some odd reason, French food is usually not on the top of my To Eat list because I’m not a fan of escargot, cold cheese and pate.  But put a steak frites or croque madame in front of me and I’m all in!  Rue Cler does a little bit of everything, working well for brunch, lunch or dinner, let’s find out why!

Side room at Rue Cler in Durham, NC Triangle Dining

Inside Rue Cler you’ll find a large open dining room with a bit of a weathered feel.  Antiqued walls, partially exposed plaster, concrete floors and more give the space a European feel.  Basic cafe seating and waitstaff decked out in crisp white shirts and black pants makes it all feel quite proper.  While I’ve been here a couple of times for dinner, today’s visit is for brunch and a large group of friends take over the side-room for some afternoon eats.

Beignets at Rue Cler in Durham, NC Triangle Dining

Our wait-person starts us off with some wonderfully, rich coffee along with the requisite mimosas and bloody mary’s. I start off the table with a plate of beignets, there’s nothing like some fried dough and sugar to get your day going.  And the beignets at Rue Cler are fantastico!  Fried up without much grease, crisp on the outside, dense and yeasty on the inside, they are excellent starters for your brunching.  We put in our orders for our mains which range from french toast, mussels, duck crepes and croque madame and it’s time to hang loose.

It takes about 20 minutes for our next service given the size of our table.  With a lot of the sandwiches you can choose from a green salad or frites but you can guess where I’m going!  My croque madame looks AWE-some!  A hefty portion of thick-cut bread with cheese, two fried eggs and some ham inside.  The frites are beautifully fried along with some mayonnaise for dipping.  I cut off a piece of the sandwich and there’s just the right amount of bread, ham, cheese and egg.  I’m not sure who invented the croque madame but thank you!  And the fries make for a great side when I add in a bit of ketchup.  Sorry for being American!  All the other dishes at the table looked pretty good, particularly the french toast and fruit, next time.

Service for our large table was not easy but our wait-person hung in there but seemed a bit stressed out.  Rue Cler is pretty busy for brunch.  Prices are reasonable, service is solid and decor is pretty rustic so I can understand why Rue Cler is a popular dining destination.  So if you’re in downtown Durham or waiting for a show at DPAC, definitely put this French eatery on your short list.  And while it may not be as popular as other downtown Durham hot spots, that may be a big advantage on a busy night.  Because Rue Cler still does a very good job at dishing out tasty French bistro fare at reasonable prices.  And there’s nothing wrong with that whether you’re talking brunch, lunch or dinner, bon appetite!

Coquette for French Flair and Excellent Service at North Hills, Raleigh

Coquette in Raleigh - nctriangledining.com
Coquette in Raleigh – nctriangledining.com

When I first moved to Raleigh back in 2008, the food scene in the Triangle was way different then it is now! There were a handful of restaurant and hospitality groups that dominated the scene including Urban Food Group which owns Chow, Vivace and Coquette. And so recently, I’ve been making some efforts to get back to some of these tried and true restaurants. After a few visits to Coquette I can happily say that this French brasserie has held up well over the years!

Sitting in a premium location at the front of the old North Hills mall area, Coquette offers up a beautiful European design for guests. Brasserie in French means a large open dining room that’s lively and noisy. Coquette totally fits that bill with a continental, white and black tiled floor, leather covered seating, along with a stylish, long bar at the entrance area. Further inside, you’ll find the main dining room with fabric-covered ceilings to quiet the room. The dining here at Coquette feels both casual, European, and civilized, harkening to an earlier time and place. Given the ambiance here at Coquette, you’ll usually run into a 35+ type of crowd who appreciates this type of more traditional dining experience and service.

The menu at Coquette sports all the quintessential French classics you’re typically hankering for:  French onion soup, salads, crepes, chilled seafood, steak frites, coq au vin and more. Entrees are in the mid-20s which is about right for a nice, French restaurant, in my opinion. And Coquette conveniently serves up a lunch, brunch, mid-day, and a dinner menu covering all the hours. Over the course of several visits, I’ve had a chance to explore a bit at Coquette and it’s been impressive!

Truffle frites at Coquette in Raleigh - nctriangledining.com

To start with, I’d recommend the classic French onion soup and croquettes! Coquette’s French onion soup has that deep rich beef broth spiked with slices of onion and topped with gooey cheese! A bit of broth-soaked croutons on top makes this soup nearly a meal but it’s such wonderful comfort food on a cold day. The croquettes are wonderful, fried potato balls with gruyere inside. A bit crunchy, a bit cheesy but totally delicious! And the classic truffle frites features skin-on fries flecked with parmesan shards and truffle oil, perfect for delicious dipping.

For lunch, try their steak sandwich! A thick slice of tenderloin tucked underneath arugula, gruyere, and aioli. Such a wonderfully tender piece of beef cooked to medium and contrasted against the greens of the arugula and savory cheese. The wonderful baguette bread that’s wrapped around the sandwich just makes it a perfect bite. For brunch, the classic croque madame is a great, fork and knife sandwich. Ham and gruyere cheese in a grilled sandwich topped with a fried egg. Served with a nice side salad in vinaigrette, it’s a wonderful option for a light but satisfying meal.

And for mains, consider the beef bourguignon or steak frites, two French mainstays. The beef bourguignon pairs tender stewed beef with wide, flat noodles and served in a soft, beef broth. It’s a fantastic meal in colder weather that’s hearty and comforting. The steak frites (choose either a flat iron cut or ribeye) shows off perfectly cooked, medium sliced beef topped with a brandy peppercorn sauce! Paired with the crispy skin-on frites, you’ll have a delicious Gallic take on the classic meat and potatoes meal.

And finishing off your meal at Coquette with chocolate profiteroles stuffed with chocolate mousse and served with raspberry sauce is a very happy ending! On the weekend, Coquette breaks out a weekend brunch menu with more favorites like a crepes, omelettes and benedicts.

One noticeable plus for me at Coquette is the service. Super professional and well-trained, they know how to take care of their customers at the bar or in the dining room. While I usually shy away from long-standing Raleigh restaurants, I’d have to say that Coquette has really held its own over the years. While still offering classic French food in a lovely setting, the prices are a bit higher than I’d like, but certainly in the range of what you’d expect from a slightly, upscale restaurant in North Hills. So a slow round of applause for Coquette! She may be a bit flirty but she still delivers a great dining experience…

More Than Pizza & Subs, Great Restaurants and Food Near UNC Chapel Hill

Franklin Street in Chapel Hill - nctriangledining.com
Franklin Street in Chapel Hill – nctriangledining.com

As a former Carolina kid, I can tell you that there are LOTS of eating options out on Franklin Street and the vicinity.  However, most of them are geared for undergrads, we’re talking about cheap and basic eats.  Lots of casual pizza places, frozen yogurt, pita sandwiches and subs.  Decent grub but not what you’d want to eat as an adult with a dining budget beyond ramen soup!  So where to go if you’re visiting the University of North Carolina with your kid or maybe you’ve got your parents in town and want to choose a nicer restaurant?  There are definitely some excellent choices for dining in Chapel Hill beyond the Franklin Street core.  Read on and just make sure your parents cover the bill!

Over in University Place you’ll find the hip and delicious bartaco (next to Silverspot Cinema). A small chain specializing in fusion tacos and a laidback beach vibe, bartaco is a wonderful spot to get your taco on! Choose from great tastes like glazed pork belly, fried rock shrimp, baja fish, carnitas and more, the tacos at bartaco are small but tasty. Paired up with the cool environment, fantastic cocktails and beautiful patio, you’re bound to have a great meal here at bartaco.

A newer option for visitors to check out is Coronato Pizza in Carrboro! This eatery serves up thin-crust Roman-style pizzas along with some Italian specialties like suppli and bombolini. Roman-style pizzas are a regional variety that adds olive oil to the dough creating a nicely browned thin-crust. Pizzas are sold in single person type sizes and are topped with fresh, seasonal ingredients. A casual but slightly expensive option for Italian eats in the area.

Up on Route 86 north of downtown Chapel Hill lies the fantastic little French bistro, the Kitchen.  Parking is tight out front but totally worth the effort.  Small and usually crowded, The Kitchen specializes in mussel and frites but does a great job with all their French bistro fare.  On my first visit I tried out a great pork belly appetizer with greens and sweet potato hash, UH-mazing!  The pork belly is as rich as you would expect but the contrast of the greens and hash balance it out well.  The basque mussels were sand-free, plump and swimming in a fragrant broth; perfect for bread dipping.   Along with the side of skin-on, salted fries, the mussels at the Kitchen are a great side-dish!  The decor inside is upscale cafe and cozy, service is quite good here.  Prices at the Kitchen are really reasonable so given the quality of food, this place is always busy.  It might be wise to make reservations and give yourself extra time to find parking in their small and usually crowded lot.  But I guarantee you their food is worth the effort!

Out west on Franklin Street is the wonderful Vimala’s Curryblossom Cafe.  Located behind Penang in a small complex, Vimala’s specializes in Kerala Indian food.  Walk through the small courtyard, through the wrought iron arch and enter into Indian deliciousness.  Vimala’s focus on local ingredients mean you get Indian cuisine that’s a level up from the usual.  Think plump samosas stuffed with potatoey goodness and crunchy pakora’s made of fresh vegetables.  My red snapper thali plate was spicy, delicately flavored bone-in fish with a wonderful assortment of small appetizers.  Just like the Kitchen, Vimala’s gets super busy at times and even with their large space, it’ll require some patience to eat here.  The staff is Carrboro hipster and not always as service-oriented as they should be which causes some of the crowd.  Thankfully they’ve got a small patio outside to handle the diner overflow!

Moving further west is the lovely Acme Restaurant which does Southern seasonal fare.  Inside Acme’s got a classic look with a slightly upscale menu with steak, crab cakes and fried catfish.  I’ve done Acme’s primarily for Sunday brunch and their AWE-some eggs benedict!  Whether you do the traditional eggs benedict with Carolina ham, crab benedict or the scallop eggs benedict, their decadent hollandaise sauce makes them both ridiculously delicious.  Toss in a slice of their coffee cake with strawberry cream and you’ll be in heaven.  Definitely a restaurant for adults and students who appreciate great food, check out my full Acme review for more details…

And finally Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen!  While Time-out Restaurant gets all the television acclaim for its chicken and biscuits, Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen is probably a better choice.  Located way out on East Franklin Street, this little drive-through dishes out wonderfully fluffy biscuits with a crisp chicken filet tucked in-between.  Perfect on the way out or into Chapel Hill, these folks are up bright and early making delicious scratch biscuits!  And if the line gets too long, you can pop inside and grab your chicken biscuit at a cash register.

Now while I’ll always enjoy classic UNC restaurants like Top of the Hill, Elmo’s, 411 West and Crooks Corner, sometimes it’s worth the effort to go beyond the standards on Franklin Street!  Like the rest of the Triangle, Chapel Hill’s food scene is slowly changing and bringing some great authentic ethnic cuisine as dining options.  I’ll be updating this post with new spots like Oakleaf, Al’s Pub Shack, Bonchon and more.  Enjoy these great eats around UNC Chapel Hill and just make sure you’re in the bathroom when the check comes out.  (Just kidding!)
