Sam Jones BBQ in Winterville, Making the Pig the Star of your Meal

Sam Jones Barbeque in Winterville - nctriangledining.com

You can’t think about food in North Carolina without thinking about barbeque! And when you think of North Carolina barbeque, some classic names come to mind: Lexington Barbeque, B’s Barbecue and Skylight Inn Barbeque. But you might want to add Sam Jones BBQ to the list! Born into NC barbeque royalty as the grandson of the founder of Skylight Inn BBQ, Sam pretty much has barbeque running through his veins and I’ve had a chance to try out his food at a couple of Raleigh events. And given his plans to open up a Raleigh location, I took a trip out to Winterville (90 minutes away) to taste what will coming soon to the Triangle. And it was GOOD!

From the outside, Sam Jones BBQ is all about a rustic A-frame ranch with a nice patio out front and smokehouse to the right. The building looks rustic and modern at the same time, I head on in to see what it’s about but the parking lot is already pretty full at 11:45am. Inside Sam Jones, they’ve got a typical counter order set up with two registers running. There’s also a bar in back which I believe is first come, first served. If you dine here, you can skip the longer line for the main dining room. The menu at Sam Jones BBQ is pretty standard: barbeque, smoked chicken and turkey along with ribs along with some special sandwiches. Ten sides ranging from cole slaw, baked beans, potato salad, fresh fruit, collard greens, chips and fries. With all the offerings between $7 and $15, everything is really affordable at Sam Jones BBQ. They also offer a handful of beers by the can or by tap, you can’t beat a good beer with these hearty eats.

Service at the counter is super polite and attentive, the staff here is very well-trained. I grab a seat at the marble-top bar and catch the latest sports news on the TV overhead. The diners here are pretty laid-back and local, lots of plaid and Carhartt in the dining area! The action in the open kitchen is pretty lively, they’re probably well used to handling large crowds.

My food arrives, served on an aluminum tray and butcher wrap paper, nestled in cardboard containers. It all looks great! From the meaty ribs, pile of barbeque and large portions of baked beans and collards. I start off with the sides and the collards are perfectly cooked with a bit of sour tang, near perfect for my palate. The greens are tender but still have good texture. And the baked beans are loaded with ground meat and cooked in a savory sauce, dee-licious!

The Eastern NC barbeque here is wonderfully tender and luscious, there are bits of fat in there that makes a chubby like me appreciate it even more. And the ribs are perfectly smoked with the meat pulling easily off the bone. Love the lighter, barbeque rub used on the ribs which is different from the typical heavier cumin-pepper-salt type rubs that are typically used. Sam Jones BBQ also provides a couple of sauces to use on their meat but when it’s done this well, you probably don’t need it. Overall, it’s a GREAT plate of barbeque and probably better then anything we can get in the Triangle except for maybe, Redneck BBQ Lab in Benson. I’m asked several times about my meal and I can only nod an affirmative as I’m stuffing my face with this meaty deliciousness.

I pop off my bar stool, totally stuffed with good eats and the line is only getting longer. As I head out, I stop and peek into the Sam Jones Barbeque smoke house and check out the pitmaster team putting out this wonderful meat. Split oak, fire and patience is crucial to making barbeque and smoked meat this good. So I am REALLY looking forward to their upcoming Raleigh location which looks like it may open in the summer of 2020 on Lenoir Street. We can definitely use a barbeque upgrade here in the Triangle and Sam Jones Barbeque does it right. There’s no denying that Sam Jones Barbeque makes the pig the star of your meal here and it doesn’t get much better then that when it’s done this well!

First Take: Redneck BBQ Lab in Benson, a Destination for Smoked Meat Lovers

Front of Redneck BBQ Lab in Benson - nctriangledining.com Front of Redneck BBQ Lab in Benson – nctriangledining.com

Outside of pizza, one one of my favorite foods has to be BARBEQUE! When you’re talking about meat smoked over hardwoods, it’s hard to go wrong when barbeque is done right. From ribs, to pulled pork, brisket and sausage, meat cooked low and slow is a special treat. And I got curious when I kept on seeing Redneck BBQ Lab showing up on my social feeds as a barbeque award winner for the area. While its bricks and mortar restaurant is in Benson, they send their food truck up to the Triangle every now and then. I’ve had a chance to dine at Redneck BBQ Lab multiple times with both their food truck and their physical store. And I quickly learned that all the awards they’ve won are well-deserved! If you’re a fan of smoked meats, read on!

If you’ve got that hankering for some ribs or brisket, just head on down south on 40 east to Benson. The Redneck BBQ Lab is conveniently located right off the highway in a….  (wait for it)  gas station strip mall. Yeah, part of me was surprised, part of me wasn’t! Head on into the restaurant and you’ll find a neat, clean, country cafe with a chalkboard menu in the corner, order counter in the back, along with a SLEW of barbeque awards and medals above the service area. Looks like the Redneck BBQ Lab does pretty well on the barbeque competition circuit!

The Redneck BBQ Lab offers up all the usual barbeque favorites: smoked turkey, chopped chicken, pulled pork, brisket, sausage and ribs. Meats are available in 1/4 lb, 1/2 lb and 1 lb increments as well as family packs. You’ve also got some fun sandwiches like the Fat Redneck (brisket, pulled pork, collards) along with a good selection of Southern sides (collards, mac n cheese, slaw, baked beans, brunswick stew, etc) And throughout the week, the Redneck BBQ Lab offers up some interesting specials like burnt ends (brisket, double-sauced), beef ribs and even pastrami, yum! Upgrade your meat with a side and drink for $2.99 or two sides and a drink for $3.99. Most meals with a side will run you under $15, very affordable.

Over the course of my three visits, I’ve had a chance to sample quite a bit of Redneck BBQ Lab’s menu. I’m a sucker for their burnt ends, chunks of brisket that are double-sauced for extra flavor! These dense, cube of barbeque beef will have your eyes rolling in the back of your end with their tender, sinewy chew and fat. They’re so rich, you need to counter-balance them with bites of sweet cornbread or the barbeque potatoes which are prepared in a light, tangy sauce. The pulled pork at Redneck BBQ Labs shows off the signature smoke ring and you can taste it in the meat. Nicely done with some slaw on top and paired with some baked beans. I’ve also really enjoyed their ribs, mac n cheese along with the potato salad, classic eats!

Prices for the Redneck BBQ Lab are right in line for most smoked meats, maybe a touch higher but worth it for what you get! Service at the Redneck BBQ Lab has been outstanding for me at both the food truck and bricks and mortar. Nice friendly folks running the counter who seem to enjoy working here and serving up great food. So a slow round of applause for the Redneck BBQ Lab. They are serving some of the best barbeque I’ve had in the Triangle even if Benson may be on the outer edge of that geo. I’ll tell you what, the food is so good here it’s worth the ride, regardless. So make your way down to the Redneck BBQ Lab and chow down on some wonderful burnt ends, you’ll be glad you made the trip!

Travel: Kindred, Dishing out Fantastic Farm-to-Table Fare in Davidson, NC!

Front of Kindred in Davidson, NC - nctriangledining.com
Front of Kindred in Davidson, NC – nctriangledining.com

While the food scene in the Triangle has been booming, it’s always great to explore other culinary delights in this lovely state. One restaurant that had hit my radar screen was Kindred out in Davidson. Known for their farm to table fare, just north of Charlotte, Kindred opened up in February of 2015 and is helmed by Chef Joe Kindred. Luckily, a trip through Charlotte was on my schedule so I took a slight detour into Davidson to meet up with friends and see what all the fuss was about…

Beautiful bar at Kindred in Davidson, NC - nctriangledining.com
Beautiful bar at Kindred in Davidson, NC – nctriangledining.com

One of the great things about Kindred is its convenient location on Main Street in Davidson. Given nearby Davidson College, there’s an academic feel to the city and you can stroll up and down Main Street peering into quaint restaurants and storefronts. It’s got a quintessential Southern feel and charm to the area which is a lot of fun. And things don’t change much when you enter Kindred. Past its large pane glass windows lies a very chic and stylish space with minimalist aesthetics. The space here at Kindred is bright, light and well designed with a centerpiece bar to the left and bricked wall to the right. Tables are neatly lined up on the right-hand side and Kindred also has a patio for outdoors dining, good stuff!

We are led to a small 4-top across from the bar and seated with a very friendly wait-person who’s extremely knowledgeable about the menu. Kindred’s lunch menu is pretty tight with a handful of starters, sandwiches and a couple of entrees. We’re trying to tag-team this meal to make sure we try not only what we want but as much as possible so there’s some horse-trading going on at our table given the delicious-sounding menu! After all is said and done, we decide to share out the crispy oysters, frites and Grandfather’s pickles. And I decide to go with the classic skillet burger with potato salad, yum!

Looking around Kindred’s dining room, I can tell you that it draws a very affluent and Southern crowd. The crisp oysters come out first and it’s a visually beautiful dish! Crisp orange-brown bivalves sitting on top of a creamy yogurt sauce (tzatziki style) and peppery Calabrian chile oil. It’s a delicate plate despite its fried nature and the crispy crunchy seafood plays well with the creamy sauce. We then jump into the fries and pickles and they are awesome! Kindred’s fries are lightly battered with a bit of dill flecked underneath and paired with a fresh aioli. And the quick pickles with shards of white onion are a fresh and crunchy bite and acts as a good palate cleanser.

Our sandwiches arrive at the table and we’re looking at the shrimp roll, BLT and my burger, fantastico! And while I’ve eaten my share of burgers, Kindred’s rendition is a thing of beauty. Two small, seared patties with lovingly melted cheddar, bits of onion and aioli, wow. The burger is small (4 – 5″ across) but delivers a mouthful, given the stacked ingredients. Kindred uses a wonderful sesame seed bun that’s been buttered and browned on the grill. Taking a bite results in a wonderful mix of beef, cheese and tang, the burger patty has been salted a bit and seared perfectly. My tablemates’ shrimp roll and BLT looks awesome, Kindred really cares about presentation even with its simple lunch offerings.

As we dine, the dining room quickly fills up with hungry locals and sadly, we have not left enough room for dessert but I’m sure they’re excellent. Overall our visit to Kindred was totally worth the stop on my way to Atlanta. Chef Joe at Kindred shows a lot of love for his eats and all the little details are covered in terms of decor, service, ingredients, plating and preparation, kudos! I’m already negotiating a return visit for dinner here because I feel that lunch is just a small reminder of what they can probably do for dinner. So I’m hoping to get back to that area, stat, for dinner at Kindred or their upcoming project, Hello Sailor on Lake Norman in Cornelius. Their food is so good, it’s worth a 2+ hour drive down south from the Triangle, enjoy!

A Beautiful Spot for Beer at Sycamore Brewing in Charlotte

Sycamore Brewing in Charlotte- NC Triangle Dining
Sycamore Brewing in Charlotte- NC Triangle Dining

With breweries popping up everywhere in the state of North Carolina, it’s getting harder and harder to stand out and be noticed. But a recent visit to Sycamore Brewing down in Charlotte showed me that there is still plenty of room for breweries to compete! Sycamore Brewing does a fantastic job of not only making great beer but also turning their brewery into a community and destination meeting spot.

What makes Sycamore Brewing such a great brewery is their multi-use design. Outside they’ve got the typical beer garden setting with a bar and picnic tables. I’ve heard they also do live music here from time to time. Head on inside to the main bar/tap area where you’ve got the usual Edison lamps overhead and a large variety of their on-premises brews, very impressive. And then they’ve got a side-room and hang-out area with four-tops which allows you to get a group together to enjoy your beers in a more civilized fashion! The interior is modern and slightly rustic, it feels a bit like a restaurant. Sycamore Brewing does do sandwiches, Monday to Thursday and has food trucks to cover the weekend.

Checking out their beer list is a LOT of fun! 16 beers on taps in a variety of styles and flavors. Sycamore has come up with some creative, cool names like the Salty Coconut Red Ale and Gourd Have Mercy Pumpkin Amber. A lot of the beers have a bit of a twist whether it’s some fruit, spice or cask aging. I start off with the vanilla session ale on this hot afternoon. And it’s a smooth, clean beer great for the heat but with some lip-smacking vanilla on the back end, nice. My next beer an Apricot Wheat is well-balanced between the light carbonation and fruit flavor, nice job there too.

As we roll into 5pm, the crowd at Sycamore Brewing thickens with the happy hour crowd. Young professionals from the local offices mixed with Carolina Panthers fans in teal blue. It seems like a happy place and it should be with this great beer, solid service and cool, mixed space. I would love to have a spot like Sycamore Brewing up in the Triangle. While we have some really good breweries, none quite as well put-together as this place. So awesome job Sycamore Brewing for raising the bar!

Travel: Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco for a Plethora of Pizzas!

Tony's Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco - nctriangledining.com
Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco – nctriangledining.com

When you talk about pizza, there are so many options and types that it makes it really hard to choose what the BEST pizza place in the country is. But the Daily Meal did just that, listing the 101 Best Pizzas in America and as a pizza fanatic, I’d have to say it’s pretty much spot-on! I’ve managed to knock a handful from the top 10 but I was so excited to try Tony’s Pizza Napoletana during a visit to San Francisco. Owner Tony Gemignani has won a bunch of competitions for his pizzas and pizza making skills so it was time for a visit. When I lived in San Francisco back in the early 2000’s, I used to always complain about the lack of good pizza. Well, it looks as if that has totally changed in the city by the bay!

Busy bar at Tony's Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco - nctriangledining.com
Busy bar at Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco – nctriangledining.com

Head on over to North Beach and you’ll find Tony’s Pizza Napoletana on a little side-street of Stockton Avenue. A stone’s throw away from the beautiful Saint Peters and Paul church, this neighborhood is considered the Italian section of San Francisco but is pretty touristy at this point and time. I pop into the restaurant and it’s quite busy at even 3pm in the afternoon! Given I’m dining solo, I grab a seat at the bar and plan to do the best with my limited space. I’m handed over a beer list and large, multi-page menu which surprises me but I quickly understand why. While I’m sipping on my beer, I realize what Tony is trying to do here. As a pizza lover, the menu here at Tony’s Pizza Napoletana tries to cover ALL the different types of pizza out there under one roof! From Neapolitan, to NY, coal-fired, classic American, classic Italian, Roman, Grandmothers, Sicilian, Detroit and even St. Louis (cracker crust). Each section of the menu has a short description describing the pie and the oven used to cook it up in, wow! Shockingly there’s not Chicago deep-dish on the menu but I’ve heard that Tony has a separate restaurant devoted to that style!

Impressed by the diversity of za on the list, I try to stick to the basics and order up some meatballs and a margherita pie. While sitting at the bar and checking out the crowd, it feels like Tony’s Pizza Napoletana could be your neighborhood pizza joint, but its fame and accolades has brought in tons of tourists and visitors. My bowl of three meatballs comes out and it looks beautiful! Three larger balls covered in a bright red marinara sauce and sprinkled with pecorino cheese. I dig in and they are delicious! Showing off a fine grind of what I’m assuming is beef and pork, they are super-tender and cooked perfectly. I try to limit my meatball intake to save room for the main course!

Next up is my beautiful pizza! And while I was tempted to try the coal-fired pie, a margherita neapolitan is my measuring stick for great pizza and Tony’s Pizza Napoletana has done a stellar job here. The pie is splotched with bright white fresh mozzarella and adorned with dark green wilted basil. The sauce is bright and fresh with a bit of soft tang. And while the crust is scorched a bit more than I’d like, it holds up well and displays a tender bite. Really an excellent Neapolitan pie, kudos to the pizzaiolo! I really wish I had more of an appetite or friends with me so I can explore more of the menu but no-go for this visit!

Pizza crust peek at Tony's Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco - nctriangledining.com

So while San Francisco didn’t have a lot of good pizza when I lived here, things are definitely looking up. In addition to Tony’s Pizza Napoletana, I’ve also heard great things about Flour + Water and Una Pizza Napoletana so maybe for my next visit! But I think I may have to work a bit further off that huge menu at Tony’s Pizza Napoletana, I’ll need a little bit of help or starve myself for the day before. Which would be totally worth it, in my opinion! Thank you Tony for rocking it out in the pizza world, I’ll be back…
