When it comes to steakhouses, I’m a fan if you’re up for spending a bit more for a deluxe experience and special evening. The newest steakhouse entry in the Triangle is Perry’s Steakhouse and Grille! Based out of Texas, Raleigh is their first location in North Carolina. It’s a modern steakhouse experience with plenty of panache and style. The design is modern and open, similar to the Oak in Raleigh. The menu spans steakhouse favorites but one special item that Perry’s is known for is its famous pork chop! A smokey, succulent bone on tenderloin that offers a lot of deliciousness in one plate. I’ve only been able to stop by once and will add to this post when there is more information to share!

Hawkers Asian Street Fare in Chapel Hill for a Mind-Bending Taste of Asia

Hawkers Asian Street Fare in Chapel Hill - nctriangledining.com
Hawkers Asian Street Fare in Chapel Hill – nctriangledining.com

As we continue to work through the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic, many restaurants are struggling to survive. And for those that opened up right before the North Carolina shutdown, it’s even harder. New restaurants that haven’t had a chance to establish a customer base, Hawkers Asian Street Food in Chapel Hill is a perfect example of that difficult scenario. But if you’re a fan of SE Asian street cuisine, you’ll really enjoy this new restaurant at University Place! Part of a smallish restaurant chain that has a locations in Charlotte and the Southeast, Hawkers Asian Street Food is dishing out some wonderful eats cooked with deft culinary talent.

Located next to the huge, Silverspot Cinema, Hawkers presents a simple modern face with side patio. But inside, you’ll find a bright, colorful and kitschy interior replete with a showcase bar in the center, booths to the right and tables in back with the open kitchen. Glowing neon, colorful posters and prints and bright metal chairs ring the dining space along with some cool architectural elements in the eclectic space. It’s a panoply of Asian-inspired nostalgia, decor and cool. Hawkers food menu is focused on bites and small plates from $5 to $12 along with noodles, rice and more. True to their name, Hawkers has food options and flavors across the Asian continent, from Singapore to China, Japan, Malaysia and more. A good selection for beers, wines, sake and island-type cocktails gives you some tasty adult beverages to pair your small plates with. Instinctively, I think beer or sake would be a great match for this type of flavorful cuisine.

After two visits I can say that Hawkers’ food menu is excellent overall but the roti canai is a must-try! This savory and layered fried pancake is served up with a powerful curry sauce that will blow away your taste-buds. Somehow they manage to make their roti canai both flaky and non-greasy which is a rare combination. Tear off a piece of the pancake, dip it into the curry and bam, a taste sensation hits your tongue.

The salt and pepper ribs are a twist on my usual favorite, salt and pepper pork chops but this dish holds its own. Three meaty ribs, dry-fried and covered with grilled onion bits, garlic and sliced jalapenos offers some savory meatiness with a hint of heat, yum. And don’t miss the chili crab, a fried soft-shell crab covered in an umami-laded brown sauce. Served up with some wok-fried tomatoes to cut away the richness and a fried bao for dipping into that delicious, thick sauce. Chili crab is a Singaporean favorite and the first time I’ve tried it, super tasty!

For a main dish the yaki udon is super satisfying. While I typically eat udon noodles in a broth or soup, these thick noodles are stir-fried with sliced chicken, egg, scallions and sprouts for a satisfying and toothsome bite. The portion size is on the smaller size (since it’s only $10) but this dish is wonderful and filling. Hawkers also offers up a smattering of sweets and desserts but I’d rather focus on the savory instead.

Service at Hawkers has been excellent during my two visits and during this current pandemic, you can call in an order for pick-up, do a delivery app or dine-in socially distanced. They are spreading patrons about their large, open dining room and there are plexiglass dividers between some tables. Overall they are holding up well under tough conditions and I do feel that street food like this, deserves to be eaten straight out of that kitchen once it hits your table.

While Hawkers Asian Street Food had the unfortunate luck to open right before the pandemic closures, I’m relatively certain they are here for the long run! Delicious pan-Asian fare in a raucous environment, the food is super-charged with flavor that all of us can appreciate. Toss in the great prices and you’ve got a deal for family or date night! Even with the 30 minute drive for me from Raleigh, I’m already looking forward to visit #3 and exploring more off of their menu. So hey, don’t forget this new hidden gem in University Place. Their menu is the real Asian deal and cooked with some talent, you don’t want to miss it even while you’re sheltering in place, bon appetit!

KoKyu Southpoint, Durham: A Fun Eatery for Casual Asian-Fusion Fare Loaded with Flavor

Way, way back in the day when the food scene was just ramping up in the Triangle, the big foodie novelty at the time (maybe 10 years ago) was food trucks! Offering up some unusual eats that you usually wouldn’t find in sit-down restaurants, food trucks blazed the trail for a lot of the more eclectic food offerings in the Triangle. The one food truck that stood out way back then was KoKyu.

A mash-up of Mexican and Asian flavors, KoKyu would be a great option after a day of drinking at popular breweries like Big Boss and Fullsteam. And like many successful food trucks, KoKyu made the move to bricks and mortar but with a twist. Kokyu’s first storefront KoKyu Na’mean, focused on Asian-style sandwiches (banh mi) and there was little menu overlap with the food truck menu. Wut?! The food was still good but there was a bit of a hole given it was missing some of my favorite, food truck items. Fast forward another 4 years and guess what? KoKyu is opening up its second bricks and mortar restaurant and it’s going back to its roots with the newer KoKyu Southpoint!

Inside KoKyu Southpoint you’ll find a bright blue and cheery space with a modern, funky feel. Polished concrete floors, spherical paper and tin washtub lamps overhead, along with a very interesting, blue triangular table in the corner. One wall has some graffiti on it in homage to their original food truck origins and design. Given their quick-serve origins as a food truck, all of the KoKyu restaurants are counter-service to keep things moving along. There are a couple of LED panels overhead with a very simple menu consisting of wings, quesadillas, tacos, bowls, salads and sliders, maybe 20 or so items including their customer favorite: duck fat tots. Once you order you’re given a playing card on a stand as your number and the food is brought to your table. KoKyu Southpoint also has a self-serve beer wall (you’ll need a wristband to use it) along with a small refrigerated case of beers to enjoy with your meal. Don’t miss checking out their restroom which has a beautiful and colorful floral stencil on the walls!

Over the course of a couple of visits I’ve had a chance to work through the KoKyu Southpoint menu and enjoy some of my long-time favorites. The short rib sliders and duck fat tots combination is still irresistible. The sliders are served on sweet buns and loaded with braised beef, topped with quick pickles (for acid), strips of red onion and sprinkled with sesame seeds. It’s a very Asian take on braised beef and delicious. The classic KoKyu duck fat tots are super crisp, sprinkled with herbs (rosemary) and served up with a sriracha-aioli type dip for your pleasure!

Another long-time favorite is the KoKyu short-rib quesadilla stuffed with more short-rib beef and gorgonzola cheese, a melty delight! Dabbed with some spicy sauce and topped with cilantro, the quesadilla is packed with flavor and filling. The bulkogi tacos are also wonderful, served on larger 6″ tortillas and loaded with fresh lettuce, tender beef, spicy cheese sauce and thin shards of red pepper. A nice Latin-American spin on a Korean-flavored classic, dee-lish! The quality of ingredients and produce used by KoKyu is always top-notch and appreciated.

Overall as a long-time fan of KoKyu it’s been fun to see them evolve and expand over the years. They’ve stayed true to the eclectic flavors of Mexican-Asian eats and it’s really nice to have their classic dishes in a more comfortable and stylish setting. We’re talking street eats with heat and air conditioning, woo-hoo! There’s even a vintage boom box up by the counter, in homage to their food truck origins when music would be blaring out the back of their truck. So a round of applause for a Durham classic, KoKyu. Keep on keeping it on and dishing out those great casual eats for the S. Durham crowds!

Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls, Raleigh – A Taste of New England Seafood in North Carolina

Mason's Famous Lobster Rolls in Raleigh - nctriangledining.com
Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls in Raleigh – nctriangledining.com

As a former, native New Englander, I can take my lobster rolls pretty seriously. And I certainly took them for granted when I lived up north. After living in San Francisco and then North Carolina over the past 20+ years, I came to realize that they were pretty much a regional delicacy given I rarely saw them served elsewhere. But time changes everything, thankfully! With Cousins Maine Lobster first opening up a food truck and then a stall at the Morgan Street Food Hall, some of my cravings were satiated. And now add one more lobster specialist to the mix, Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls!

Located in the older area of North Hills near the Renaissance Hotel, Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls (MFLR) sits in a narrow little space on a corner of a building. Lots of plate glass windows and sidewalk seating, it’s all counter order and pretty basic here! And the menu is pretty basic too, offering up a handful of classic New England seafood items: NE and CT lobster rolls (lobster dressed in either mayo or butter), bisque, chowder along with a handful of other sandwiches. Lobster rolls are offered in two sizes, the regular ($16) and Bar Harbor (meat of full lobster, $20). The lobster is flown in twice a week from Maine to make sure it’s as fresh as can be!

Over the course of two visits I’ve had a chance to try the loaded Bar Harbor lobster roll, Connecticut-style, lobster bisque and lobster cheese sandwich. The CT style lobster is luscious, rich lobster covered in clarified butter on a toasted side-split hot dog bun. It’s a classic take on a lobster roll and worth the calories! The warm buttery, bun plays off nicely against the lobster. Highly recommend their ooey, gooey cheese sandwich stuffed with lobster pieces and dipping it into some lovely lobster bisque. You can even order lobster on top of your bisque for some extra flava!

Service at Mason’s has been decent but given the counter service, it’s not that complicated. All in all I do like Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls and their seafood here. The lobster here is certainly pretty fresh and what they’re doing is right on par with what you might find up in New England. But let’s face it, the small menu means you really have to be craving lobster to come here. And with a concept similar to Cousins Maine Lobster, you’ve now got another good option to get your lobby on!

Chido Taco in Raleigh: Serving Up Tacos and Mexican Deliciousness

Chido Taco in Raleigh - nctriangledining.com Chido Taco in Raleigh – nctriangledining.com

When it comes to tacos, I can’t get enough! Like burgers or pizza, tacos are one of those ubiquitous food items that always seems to hit the spot. The challenge is finding really GOOD and authentic taco places, whether you’re talking food trucks, restaurants or what have you. Online reviews for Chido Taco caught my attention a while back online so I decided to track this taqueria down. Located in the recently constructed McNeill Pointe, Chido Taco is doing some really unique and special things to the traditional taqueria concept. And outside of trying to find parking in this busy shopping plaza, it all really works well in my book!

Kitchen at Chido Taco in Raleigh - nctriangledining.com Kitchen at Chido Taco in Raleigh – nctriangledining.com

Stepping into Chido Taco you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported south of the border! While Chido Taco may be about mercado (market) style tacos, we’re talking about a very modern market! Large and bright space with an open kitchen, cocktail bar in back and casual cafe seating, the front counter looks like painted corrugated steel giving everything an industrial look. And there’s plenty for modern art and logos painted on the walls giving the space a light and lively feel. Maybe it’s the salsa music playing overhead that gets your toes tapping!

Cocktail bar at Chido Taco in Raleigh - nctriangledining.com Cocktail bar at Chido Taco in Raleigh – nctriangledining.com

Head on to the back of the order counter and you can order up some classic Mexican eats in the form of tacos, bowls, tortas and burritos. The tacos and burritos come in six different proteins: pork (al pastor), chicken (pollo adobado), steak (bistec), beef tongue (lengua), beef belly (suadero) and cactus-poblano (nopal-rajas). There’s also a menu of specialty tacos like fish, octopus and more. Tortas are a new addition to the menu and come in steak, chorizo, link sausage and more. One negative at Chido Tacos is that you don’t get chips with your meal and have to order them a la carte. Tacos run from $2.49 to $2.99 while burritos are $7.99 to $8.99 a pop, a very inexpensive meal!

After you order at the counter you’ll get a buzzer and you can grab a table. Couple of things to take note, Chido Taco cooks up its al pastor (pork with pineapple) on a traditional trompa which is a vertical spit and the meat is shaved off, very cool! There’s also a condiment bar with salsa, jalapenos, pico de gallo, red onion, cilantro and lime to bling our your tacos once you get them. Chido Taco serves up its tacos naked so you’ll need those self-serve extras to dress up your lunch.

Al pastor taco at Chido Taco in Raleigh - nctriangledining.com Al pastor taco at Chido Taco in Raleigh – nctriangledining.com

My favorites at Chido Taco are the Al Pastor (sliced off the trompa) and the bistecca (steak) tacos! The meat for both is well-seasoned with a bit of char for extra flavor from the flat-top. Their al pastor is served with a bit of sliced pineapple for some sweetness along with the pork, perfection. The tacos are served with a single, fresh tortilla and for the most part it holds up while eating.

If you’re not in a mood for tacos, you’ve got burritos, quesadillas, tortas and bowls as your other options and I can say that their burritos are quite good. Packed a bit smaller than I’m used to and seared on the outside, there’s plenty of grilled meat inside along with some lettuce for contrast. While the burrito is decent, I’d have to say I prefer the SoCal style burritos at Los Cuates down the street. But still a good option if you’re dining here at Chido Taco. The quesadillas here are perfectly grilled and stuffed with a good ratio of cheese and meat. A more American option for eats here at Chido Taco!

Decor at Chido Taco in Raleigh - nctriangledining.com Decor at Chido Taco in Raleigh – nctriangledining.com

After the meal, feel free to bus your meal and tray up at the front of the store, it’s a casual eatery so good to help out and keep costs low. Because Chido Taco is offering some great Mexican eats and tacos at food truck type prices. Given the cool, colorful space and options around beer and liquor, it’s certainly a more sophisticated way to do street tacos without the street. And I love that concept here for Raleigh. While there are a ton of little taquerias scattered around Durham and Carrboro, having Chido Taco in ITB Raleigh is a great and inexpensive option for dining. If you appreciate it for what it is, I think you’ll love the food and ambiance here, delicioso!
