New to Raleigh on August 15 will be the new social district downtown. Announced on July 6 and passed by the Raleigh City Council, open containers (branded drinking cups, up to 16 oz.) will be allowed as you move around in the Sip n’ Stroll district. The district will be open 7 days a week from 11am to 10pm, please see map and geographic details below.
The changes were made to help improve downtown Raleigh businesses, post-pandemic, and will act as a pilot for the region. Drinking districts are already in use in Greensboro and Kannapolis and are in consideration for Durham and Chapel Hill. Given the frequency of festivals (Hopscotch, SparkCON, Brewgaloo) downtown, I think the concept makes total sense but let’s enjoy this privilege responsibly. More details to come as we get ready to go live in mid-August!
