It's always great to have a neighborhood restaurant but what if you don't live in the neighborhood?! Taste American Tapas is a new eatery located in an odd little spot off of Dixie Trail Road. While the neighborhood is residential and upscale, this small shopping area and the plaza across the street is a work in progress. Inside Taste you'll find a tasteful cafe interior with random pieces of art and a light-hued bar flanking the kitchen. The menu is short and focused on funky plates with different Taste combinations. I ordered up a cous-cous tossed in yogurt along with some slow roasted pork on warm potato salad. As I waited for my food, I scanned the crowd and yes, it probably was local given Taste's location. Think a bit older and female and you'll probably understand the scene here.
So my food comes out and it's interesting stuff, the cous-cous comes in a drinking glass and the plate of slow-roasted pork is a nice contrast of hues. A small pile of fork tender pork set on top of thin, braised wedges of Yukon Gold (I think) potatoes with a hint of marinade. But the Israeli couscous was definitely the winner, tossed in a light yogurt sauce and mixed with pistachios, raisins and bacon. A nice contrast of flavors, colors and textures. Overall I liked my plates at Taste because they were definitely fresh and well-prepared. And the service was friendly and amenable but a bit more casual than I would have preferred. What is really nice is that Taste runs a lot of daily specials that seem to be of pretty good value so check out their schedule! In the end if you live in the hood, Taste is a great little spot for a casual bite and drink. If you're not, I'd make an effort to stop in from time to time but I admit it wouldn't be on top of my list given its location. But yes, you should definitely give Taste a taste, cause they are off to an excellent culinary start...
